Just out of curiosity i was wondering if big brands hired designers to do theyre work or is the one designer which would be the owner of the company doing all or most of the designs. So basically i want to if big brands (ex:crooks and castles, lrg, nixon just to name a few) hire designer or is it the owner that designs everything. like most people on the site i have my own clothing company (newly established) and i do all the designs and would like to keep it that way if my brand ever makes it to be a multi-million dollar company.

I know that Obey has 2 designers that keep the integrity of Shepard Feirey's original intentions, so I think it's possible that other brands do so as well. One thing to consider is that when you become a big time professional brand, you will most likely become a business person first and foremost and you will have to hire someone to do some work for you.

2500hd took the words right out of my mouth. If your business is successful enough to be bringing in millions of dollars a year, even hundreds of thousands, that will require many different designs and products not to mention the marketing and managing of everything that comes along with running a business. By then you would likely have a team of people working for you, and at some point you may likely run out of ideas for designs so a fresh mind wouldn't be a bad thing to feed off of.

I doubt there's a single large ($1,000,000+) brand where the original creator still does all of the design work. In fact, at that point it's pretty common for the founder not to get to do any design work.

As Solmu said, if the company is large enough the founder does very little designing. However they will most likely act as an art director and all the designs go through a critique before being released to the printer.

Even the best designers at large design firms barely do any designing themselves. They just hire younger designers to do all the work and the better designer becomes the art director.

Yes major brands have multiple designers. If their product line is fairly large you can bet they have someone who runs the design department. They may have staff designers and some will still contract out designs to graphic designers that they know and like. I suppose there are a few exceptions but thats not the norm. Its not a problem that you should waste any energy on right now. You would be blessed to have the problem of to much business for you to manage the design side of the business.

What about Ed Hardy?

Aren't most of those designs Christian Audigier's work?
The Ed Hardy clothing brand is based on the works of famed tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy. Audigier purchase a license to use his art. Anything that is used for the brand that is not an original Don Ed Hardy work is probably done by a graphic designer on staff, not Christian Audigier himself. When you get to that level, you can afford to hire high end artists to do the work for you.

Yes, Big Brands and Fashion Designers, Hire out..(Sub Contract) as well as have their own Design Teams..

When I have been contacted it is them finding me, and they Hire me per job, with the conditional use of their label,, just like when working for a pro sports team or Recording artist, .

They always have the idea they want done and , you just help make it real,,

Sometimes it is because they have a major deadline and cant pull things together for one reason or another,, and sometimes they just want new ideas.
