So which would be a better option a used but good condition geo knight DK20 ($500) or a brand new HPN signature series auto open($600)?

thanks
The Geo knight press is the better pick IMO.

is there a way to test a used heat press for even heat? or is there things to look for that are red flags? He claims the press is in very good shape, he is just closing up shop and no longer needs it.

thanks

The way geo knight heating elements are designed/made they dont have cold spots. If it gets hot then you should be good.

Cold spots are more or less from having the element inside the heat platen spread to far apart, etc.

Here is what i would check:
Does it open and close smoothly?
Does the frame look straight? (for a clam shell press)
What is the cycle count on it? (Easy to check in the menu)
Is the platen in good condition...none to very minimal scratches?
Does it count down when closed? (if not its about $15 to fix, or could be a plug that came off the control board..2 min fix)
If its a clam shell (vs swing away) do the gas shocks hold it open? (if not it is about $15 each to replace and takes less then 5 mins to do all of them)
Does it beep when the timer reaches "0"? (If not it could be set to not use a beep in the menu or it is $15 for the part to replace it and takes about 1 min)
If the screen has a blue back light it is a newer model vs no back light and black text is an older one.

$500 for it sounds like a great price, even if you need to do a few things to make it basically new again.

Let me know if you have any questions about it. If you can post a few good pics and I can let you know what I think.

500 of my hard earned dollars,
i would spend $5-$10 to check for even temp on a used machine, regardless of make
I would never suggest that people dont check used presses before buying them, if you have the means.
But not everyone can do that (like via eBay, etc.).

I have bought and resold 50+ geo knight presses, besides the 12+ presses we have. I have NEVER had a platen not heat up and not have even heat. Like I said it cant, it doesn't work like that. (That is why they warranty the heating platen for life)
I do check them...after I buy them. I am checking though for the temp read out to be accurate and I adjust it if it is not.
This is the BEST way to check for accurate even heat on ANY press. https://www.heatpress.com/products/digital-pyrometer-and-surface-probe-kit but most people dont want to spend $100.

Thanks guys, I am starting out small, just with my plotter and a heat press for now I am getting some samples in from a few custom plastisol transfer folks to test the waters of having my designs made up.

I figure the geo knight will serve my purpose it seems to heat up and clamp tight so now to find a supplier for the rest of what i need again thanks for the input.

That is great!

Just an FYI, if the press ever inst clamping nice and tight... You can get a hardware kit from George Knight that gives you all the bolts, washers, nuts, and bushings. This kit makes it feel new again. Pretty sure it runs $20.00. Takes about 15 mins to replace them.

Good luck with getting your business started!
