I've had a logo drawn up by an artist I know for my clothing company I am in the process of starting.

I have been advised to have the logo digitalised to make it more suitable for print and make it more professional, is this the case?

Digitizing is converting the logo into a stitch file for embroidery machines. It has absolutely nothing to do with making it more suitable for print or making it more professional.

What does this mean?

you need a vector image so you can print the films for the spot colors or you need color separations so you can do process printing.

Basically, each color either gets its own section or mask (vector) or you use Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black to make the colors (seps) plus any spot colors you need.
