Design on front vs. on back?

I've read whatever threads I can find on here about putting your shirt design on the front or back. Most seem to agree you should put a normal design on the front. However I have been buying some transfers from a biker shop in Daytona Beach, Florida.

For biker dudes they seem to prefer the design on the back of the shirt. In fact they make two designs as a set; one big one for the back and the same image in a small size for the front, left chest area. That seems to go against what is "normal", which is one big design on the front.

I plan to make lots of biker designs as well as more general ones. I even see shirts with a big design on both front and back. So, is there a general "rule" with different types of customers when it comes to deciding to put the design on the front, back or even both sides?

There's no Norm. Really, it's what your customers want. Like you said, the Bikers want it on the back. It's just a preference.

Some people like big transfers on either front or back. If you're selling to Bikers, and they like it on the back, than make them with designs on the back.

There is no general rule. Try it a couple of ways and see what sells best. Visit online biker apparel stores and see what their best sellers are.

A small breast print and large back print is totally normal. So is a back print only or a front print only....... !

Your next question will probably be where do you position the breast print! I go a handwidth down from the bottom of the neck seam and 3 fingers in from the centre. Normally on the left side ( the same side as your left arm when you wear the shirt), as in Western culture that is where we generally look (probably related to books).

Thanks for the replies so far. Guess it's about learning as you go and seeing how others do it. I have gone into biker shops to see how they put their designs on. Often it's a mix. So I guess all I can do is mix it up a bit and see what sells. Thanks! :)
I think I see more of a trend of guys usually wanting stuff on the back and women wanting it more on the front when I ask.

I think design sometimes plays a bit into it too (IE: music bands generally go on front of shirts, corporate shirts I always suggest left chest logo, somethin big on the back if they want big, so on).
I put these two designs on the front and back of a shirt of mine today just to experiment. That is overkill I think, but I was just having fun and learning. I notice I put the designs a bit too low.

Is a good thing you want to know what the industry standard is. Ultimately your customer preference will take precedence over any opinion on this thread. Large image on the back of a shirt and small on the pocket seemed perfectly ideal. For free design tool visit www.klydesignstudio.com
