I was reading through a bunch of posts and would like to understand the cut & sew services better. I am currently designing dart shirts for fun. To complete this project I would need a service to print and heat press them to fabic and send it back to me. I would do the rest of the cutting and sewing. To protect my patterns should I just send out my images to the services in rectangles knowing that my pattern will fit inside? Then when I receive the material I apply my patterns and cut it out and sew?

Am I making sense? ;) Are there services that would be ok with the printing and pressing to fabric while allowing me do the rest?

I would print them out and heat press them myself but I am not going to drop $18K for fun. ;)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

Not sure of your specific product but although one should protect anything that is unique to themselves one can go overboard. A reputable cut and sew shop will already have patterns for almost anything so the chances of one stealing your pattern and recreating it not big. It really is no different with design art. You can spend countless hours trying to protect your art or you can better spend that time making money.

There should be a good number of people who will print and send you fabric but that is the easiest part of the process. A professional seamstress with the background sewing this king of fabric is more difficult. If you have someone than you are set and again a number of people can assist you. If you do not have a professional seamstress and have the ability to tell a professional job from a not so professional you are better off outsourcing the entire process. There are pictures posted here regularly over the years that have horrible craftsmanship yet the people do not even recognize it.

My wife comes from a family of professional seamstresses although we will take a hit on the stretch materials. Meaning we will be buying extras until she get's used to the stretch material. Does anyone have a cheaper material she can learn with?

I have been giving your responses a lot of thought as well as your posts in other threads. I think there would be value gained by having a service sew the first couple. It will be important for us to understand where the bar for a high quality item will be. If anyone has recommendation for a service like this please PM me.

Thanks,

-Brian
