Hi,

My friend and I are starting a clothing line and are getting some T-shirts made by a cut & sew factory. We're 6 weeks into the process and have only received a sample and we're still waiting on the size run. This is starting to get frustrating since we want to move forward with our brand. Is this normal timing for making a custom T-shirt? We paid 80% up front and it seemed high at first, but now it seems like there is no urgency in finalizing our purchase. Is 80% too much money up front? They are not very good at communicating either and can take up to a few days to respond.

The T-shirt is a plain white T, nothing fancy or crazy about it.

Yes, that is a lot to put down and 6 weeks is ridiculous. What kind of qty are you running and what kind of fabric? Did they do the patterns, grading, markers, purchase fabric, whole package? And, are you able to visit their facility? Sounds like this is not a good deal for you.

They are a vertically integrated company so at the start we came to them with just an idea. It is a basic t shirt. 50% supima/50% micro modal. Qty-100 white 100 black. We have visited the facility, approved the fit sample and are supposed to approve the grading on Monday which would be the 7th week after placing the order. Thank you for your response.

Sounds as if you have been pushed to the back of the bus. I suppose if you aren't in a hurry and you get a nice product, it's all good. I would certainly keep the delay in mind if you plan to do production with them as you could easily miss ship dates and this would be a terrible way to start off. I have a small production facility and work closely with smaller lines and when you're trying to get rolling those delivery dates are critical! Best of luck!!

Usually if "Yarn" is ready available it takes 6 days to knit & dye the fabric & about max two days to stitch the garment in small sized stitching units.
in my unit i usually take about a week max to produce 700-1000 pieces if it is cotton or poly stuff of regular class. in case of specialty yarns, custom color shades, cosmetic dying it takes additional 14 days to process for the same quantity.
it is more then a hell of time 1.5 months for 200 pieces in total negotiate again may be they've putted it in production que & delaying it till they complete previous orders.
