I know this is probably a VERY simple thing to do but I'm struggling so hopefully you all can help :)

I'm trying to create a border around a number that's exactly like the "7" shown here. How do I do that?

On a semi-related note, if I have a pattern that I'd like to use as a border, how would I do that?

Thank you!

Assuming the "7" is on its own layer and not just a black and white jpg or something the steps are rather simple. If it is a flat jpg you need to use the magic wand tool and select the "7" and then cut it out and paste it back on layer so its all by itself.

After that double click on the layer and give is a "Stoke". Use red to begin with so you can see how wide you want the space between the letter and your border. After you figure out the right space, make the stroke color white (white doesnt print). After that right click on your layer and convert it to a smart object. Then right click it again and "Raserize Layer".

Then double click the layer again and add another stroke of black as thick as you want for your border.

Hope this helps.

Photoshop is not good with keeping those sharp corners though. Basically, the bigger the stroke the more rounder the corners become. Someone posted up a technique in Photoshop on this forum recently for strokes without losing the sharp corners, but it seems to not work perfectly. This is best done in a vector program.
