So, something I need to incorporate with my business plan will be the future costs of selling to retail stores. Obviously one of those costs would be UPC codes. From what I've been reading on the various posts you can register with the UPC people for about $700 and get unlimited UPCs. Sound about right? And then I read bout $30 for a tag gun and then you can get tags made in bulk...

Am I on track? Also, is it cheaper to renew your membership? I thought I read that...

Some stores will use their own UPC (all the ones I've sold in so far do), so getting them may be unnecessary. Just leave a space on the hang tag for it. I haven't yet had to register to get my own UPCs.

Of course, check with the stores you might be selling in first to see what they do with them.

Thank you for making this point! I really hope the future retailers we work with have their UPC tags.

you could get a decent label printer for < $150 and print your own bar codes to add to your hang tag as well
