Hi. Copyright 'in theory' exists from the moment you produce the work. There is no cost to copyright your work, in that context.
One of the biggest problems with copyright, is that you cannot be sure that a similar design does not already exist elsewhere. Someone can always claim that their design pre-dates your own, which can be difficult to disprove.
