Hi everyone,

I came across a Roland GX-24 vinyl cutter for $1200 it's used approx 7 yrs old. The outer casing is quite roughed up. The cutter does run I have seen it in action.

I guess the question is should I go for it or should I leave it and buy a new one?

Any suggestions from anyone who has expierence with the cutters would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, why dont you look up online to see if there is another way to get a new cutter, there is more brands. I understand that Rolands are very good but when new. I would not buy a cutter that old. Actually, my Roland GX-24 just stopped working yesterday and it was only two years old. I always took care of it, but for some reason the motor does not respond. Just to give you an idea, the tech guys told me they charge $125 an hour for repairing it + parts cost + shipping = alot of $$ Just think about that. You probably want to get a new cutter. I just got a new cutter last night (im still waiting for it, it will be here tomorrow morning, yes!) I did not have the funds to buy another Roland, so I got a Copam series 2500 which I read its not bad for the price ($749). I did some research all day yesterday to be able to find a good cutter that would fit my budget.

I know that everybody wants to get a good brand, but for my experience its not that great to have your cutter broken down in the middle of a job and having clients waiting for their orders.

So good luck,

Thanks Juan, I will have a look at the Copam series online and go from there. It's too bad to hear about your Roland so far all I heard from everyone I spoke to is that they are like work horses. Hopefully, your new cutter does everything you want it too and without any issues. Goodluck!

@ Gerry and Jon, I had a feeling it was a rip off but I figured I would ask around anyways just to be sure. I feel better not leaving any cash with the guy now. Any suggestions on where in Ontario I could pick up a used GX-24 from a reliable source?

If your going to spend 1200 for a used one...a new one goes for about 1500. I would flip the difference and purchase new.

Hey Chuck,

Initially I was going new and probably still will, this used cutter just came out of no where so I thought I would just ask around if it was worth the money. I have priced a few locations here in Ontario, Canada and it seems it will be in the 2200-2500 range before taxes.

Here in the us it's about 15 or 16 hundred. Didn't know you were in Canada. Look at the left in prefered vendor list and see if you can get a deal.

Or consider refurbished. If the machine has gone through the hands of pros, if there's at least some warranty, and if the price is according.
That labor price of 125/h stuns me. That's probably more than most Mercedes services charge.

$125/hr is about the going rate for a tech here in Aust as well.
Our embroidery machine techs are around $100/hr on site and $60/hr travel time.
My last service call cost me over $2000 and he was here 2 days, all to replace a $9.00 part:(

After seeing everyones post I probably will not go for the used machine. I was going to consider trying to talk him down on the price but I don't think it will work since he was so persistant that the deal hes giving me is the best one I will find in my area.

Thanks to everyone who responded, really appreciate the advice or I probably would have made the wrong decision.

Thanks,
