Coating Screen Sideways

Just a quick question...
if I'm coating a screen that's 20"x24" (including frame) with a 16" scoop coater does it really matter if I hold the screen in "landscape" position (sideways) and coat upwards instead of the usual way of doing it?

I have a 12" scoop coater that leaves those small beads or lines on the sides of where I pull the emulsion across so I went to get a bigger one but all they had was a 16" one-which is too wide to use when the screen is in the upright/usual position...so I just hold the screen sideways and coat it that way.

does that matter or as long as it coats evenly then it's ok??

I have never coated a screen in landscape mode, but I dont see why it would hurt.....as long as you get a even coat with no build up of emulsion in the image area....have you tried to do this yet?

I would think that it would matter. Where the emulsion overlaps itself isn't it going to act just like a second coat? If it does then you would essentially have four coats of emulsion where it overlaps itself.

Doesn' t matter. I do "landscape" all the time because I have wide scoop coaters.

As long as it's even and consistent and you care for your coaters. Nicks make lines.

There's also discussion as to whether one, 2 or more coats are necessary, which sides get how many, and if you should dry between coats.

I depends...
I wouldn't 'seam' coats, but I get the impression that's not what you're talking about, right?

If you're using a wider coater than will fit portrait, I didn't have any problems coating landscape--did it for years when I was using wood statics as well as rollers.

The other thing I'd mention is that a bigger supply company will be able to make you a custom one that's the perfect size for the screen size you use most.
