Cant you do it the way that amp has described and then weld the lines? that should make it one piece that is able to be cut.

make both your circle.....convert the middle circles outline to object......make a rectangle that you will use to trim the middle circle......place the rectangle where you want it to trim....select your rectangle, while holding shift select the inner circle.....push your trim buttom......delete your rectangle, and there you have it

Thanks, I've been working on this off and on all afternoon and I can not get it to work. I've also tried what torodesigns suggested and that works but then when I use the conture tool it has a line on the inside which will not work for cutting, why can I not get this to work. I need to get this done by tomorrow. I've done every step as you describe but then when I delete the square the circle is still there am I missing a step?????

To achieve this effect what you have to do is convert your inner circle to curves and then with the shape tool (F10) right-click the line and select "Break apart". Now when you trim the circle you will get the result you want.

Hope it helps
