hello everybody, i've been wanting to print my own designs on shirts for selling...and i'm not sure if i should buy a heat press or just have them screen printed somewhere...i hear both good and bad things about the heat press so i'm not sure what to do....i'd much rather do it myself but i was wondering if the quality of a heat pressed t shirt is realy as bad as some people say or would they last as long as something screen printed?

Get a good heat press and a good cutter like the Roland GX-24, set up an account with Stahl's, buy some vinyl and have at it. Transfers are a good place to start. If you want farm out some screen printing and if the business takes off then get some screen printing equipment. I use and like Vastex, works great. If done properly transfers will last a long time.

The heat press and cutter will cost you around $3000 and the screen printing equipment for a 6 x 4 with all the goodies will cost you around $25k to start.

good luck

sounds doable....but is the vinyl cutter necessary for heat press? and how do i choose a good heat press? i've been looking them up and they all seem to do the same thing even though the prices vary quite a bit...

If you want an affordable heat press go with Sunie.com My 16x24 heat press at the time cost me only $399. And I love it. And you really dont need to spend that much on a vinyl cutter either. I bought a 25" vinyl cutter from uscutter.com and it works great, but I dont use it anymore since I decided to go with outsourcing my design needs. I now use DowlingGraphics to make my heat transfers.
