Hi all,

I did some searching around the forum and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

Last night I had some issues doing my first dark T. When I purchased my gx-24, I received some sample JetDark and JPSS sheets. I decided to do an opaque printout and cut; everything came out great. Since it had lettering, I knew I needed some type of transfer tape to move it to the shirt. Looking through all the samples and stuff I received, I found 1 sheet of transfer tape, or at least I thought. I cut it to size and stuck it to my design. I had a hard time lifting the artwork from the JetDark backing so I used a little scribe to get it started. It took a while since I had to do this for every letter. Finally everything was ready to go. Artwork check, printing check, cutting check, weeding check, transfer check, heat press warm check.

Followed the instructions for 350 for 10 seconds....when I lifted it I noticed the transfer tape was gone, the colors were faded, and there was some residue on the shirt. I looked under the press and the transfer tape was all melted up underneath. I spend about 5-10 minutes scrapping it off...I was bummed.

I thought about what I did wrong and then I relalized that I think that 1 sheet of transfer tape came with the roland and it was probably ment to work with the vinyl sample, for stickers or something and not garments. Do you think this was the issue?...Oh well, lesson learned...

Can someone recomend a roll of transfer tape that will work with opaque paper? I found some recommendations for the thin strips of heat tape used for holding dye sub images down, but I'd really like to by rolls....12" - 19" wide if possible. I also found something call Uni mask from Coastal Business, but it mostly talks about heat transfer vinyl products for garments and not heat transfer papers that are not vinyls. I notice alot of sign decals sell the rolls, but I'm not sure how they would work on garments or with the opaque paper.

Any recommendations would be appreciated....

For opaque transfers I use alpha gold for darks and just lay a piece of parchment paper from the grocery store over it .

Hi Terry,

Are you talking about during the press? I do have some teflon, but I thought that transfer/carrier tape was supposed to work without any heat protection.

How about the transfer portion? Since I had lettering, I needed to transfer the lettering to the shirt and that's where I screwed up. Any recommendations on rolls of carrier/transfer tape that works on opaque paper?

I didn't use a carrier sheet at all. I printed the picture and some text ( the text was what was real hard to trim around and had a white " cloud" around it )and since the text crossed the picture, I cut it as one piece. Then I pealed the backing off and aligned it up on the shirt(s) and placed a piece of parchment paper on it and pressed. I can see where you would probably want a carrier sheet to keep everything aligned after you peel the backing. I'm learning (realizing) some things I haven't thought to prepare for when I get my cutter. As far as what is a good carrier paper, I haven't gotten that far ahead yet. I have a habit of jumping in with both feet and figuring out where things actually fit into my world when and as I need to. Bad business planning I know but I would not find life much fun without some small adventures. Anyway, I'm sure someone more qualified than me (already using vinyl and knows good backing paper) will chime in (I hope) soon. If they don't, just keep coming back th this post and write something to give it a "bump" to keep it relevant and someone will finally give you a better answer than I can . Good luck.

Hi Terry,

I'm the same way. I bought a bunch of equipment going off of different recommendations here on the board and then just jumped in and started making stuff. So far it's been fun, but challenging. I was able to make my softball teams' shirts and then I was trying to make a dark shirt and that's where I screwed up with the transfer tape.

So far I've made a couple of calls and been recommended the following for higher temps 350-400:
-Uni MASK - 19" x 5yds from Coastal Business
-TTD Mask from Imprintibles
-Another transfer tape from The Paper Ranch

I'm going to pick some up and try it...I'll let you know what works for me.

Here is a link of opaque that Specialty Graphics sells. In the instruction section at the bottom of the page an application tape is recommended when transferring opaque that has spaced design e.g. lettering and graphics combined.

Is their a tack designation for your Magic mask, light med, heavy or is there just one?
There are three grades. I can't remember what I bought. It has been a while. I think I had heavy. It is reusable by the way. I used it on any brand of opaque including blue grid for Koozie, shirt and banner. By the way I use laser to print on Blue Grid.
