Be careful when looking for a sales rep. I would start off looking for a road rep, so that you don't have to pay monthly rent fees or high market fees.

Make sure you scrutinize over the contract with them, as I got screwed over big time with my old reps. Ask for a list of brands they rep, and even contact those companies to get a review.

Reps will say anything to get you to sign up, so just make sure they are doing well and are honest (relatively). I don't know what area you are in, but try to do some fashion networking, and ask people aroudn in the industry if they have any referrals.

Thank you for replying, that’s interesting, because I didn’t know there was a difference. I thought a sales rep was a sales rep, how do you look for a road rep vs. regular sales rep?

There are different kinds of sales reps. I'm based in the LA area, and there are the Los Angeles showroom buildings here, where either designers or sales reps will rent out. Sales reps located in these will charge you rent because you're taking up space in their showroom. During market week, buyers will come to these buildings to browse through and take orders.

Road reps don't have brick and mortar locations, and will travel around to visit the buyers. I think they are the best to start off with, as the cost is a lot lower, but the exposure is also lower.

O.K., I see. The problem I have is that I’m using Tampa Fl. as my base of operations and I’m physically located in Wichita Ks., so I’m having major problems locating any sales rep. Everyone wants to sell me a book or database at $150 to $500 to find a rep. You’re in a great location being that CA. is the one of largest fashion capital in the US but here in the Land of OZ I’m struggling. Any suggestion or contacts you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

RepSource Sales Agent and Manufacturer's Reps

This is a listing of different trade reps...go under gifts heading to find reps that carry t-shirts. These companies are paid by commissions on the products that they sell. They will not charge you for services, you pay them when they sell something. They will expect protected territories and a percentage on each sale that is generated by their customers but this is YOUR sales force.

We primarily sell funny tees. Since we cater to the college crowd, we actively search for college kids to do marketing for us. We created an affiliate program that pays them for every sale they bring in.

How did you find the college kids? Ad in newspaper? Person to person? If you don't mind my asking, what percentage do you pay them? Has this been a successful marketing too? Thanks.

Thanks for the information, I found this website some time ago. It's a good site but again they want you to order a directory for buyers and sales reps. I been told that a lot times these directories are not updated on a regular basis. Individuals leave, number changes, no longer in the business etc. I'm going to attend the Magic show next month in Vegas to see how the process works. Hopefully I'll be able to do some networking and make some real face to face contacts. With this economy looking so bad I would like to speak with some sales reps and buyers to get a feel on what they are experiencing.

No I would not purchase it either. I would just try the free contacts they have listed. I saw some showrooms and they link to a couple of other sites I believe that are rephunters or something
