If anyone can put it into plain english that would be great. Feel free to talk at me like I am in kindergarten. (which for all intents and purposes I am here)

Can a little vinyl cutter cut out a design from inserting a regular heat transfer paper into it?
Went to Long Beach Trade Show. asked ten people and got different answers but never saw anything but vinyl rolls inserted into a cutter.
Thanks!!! D

A cutter can cut transfer paper, but, (there is always a but) to cut out a design, you need a cutter with an optic eye. This allows the cutter to follow a pre-determined path (vector path) on the outline of your design. The SW will put registration marks and you print those on the transfer paper with your design. The optic eye sees the marks and knows where your design is and cuts around it. Other cutters without an optic eye will cut other vector files like text which is prob. what you saw done at the shows.

Wow! Thanks so much for the quick reply and good information! My fingers are crossed too, as well as my toes, eyes.....etc:)
Depending on the cutter and how inventive you what to get you could cut a lot more than what they demo at the shows.
You ask if you can cut put regular heat transfer paper into a cutter?
Yes you can. The Roland GX24 cutter has an optical eye so you could use, lets say Inkjet transfer paper, and print your design using the program that comes with the cutter. It will also print registration marks so you can place the printed transfer in the cutter and again using the program to create a cut contour (cut line around your design) cut around the image. When cutting you adjust the blade so it scores the paper but does not all the way through.

Now on this same cutter I have cut designs scrapbooking paper. How, by using a low tack mask as a backing sheet. It comes in rolls so all you need to do is cut a section a little larger than your paper and mount the paper to the mask. I also put masking tape on the edges of the mask to stop the wheel on the cutter from sticking. Adjust your blade so you are cutting through the paper only and go.

Goodness! Thank you very much! I simply am so new to this it is scary all I don't know!
This is great information!
Thank you again

You're very welcome! Any time you need help just ask. I have been working with cutters for a long time, over 20 years. I know they can be a little intimidating in the beginning. Once you get to trust yourself and the cutter you will find most of your work or thinking about how something needs to be done is in the program you are using. The cutter only does what you tell it to do.

Great info, I learned something from Corel Whisperer

It is amazing to me that you, with such knowledge will take the time to help we newbies! I hope to help others in this forum someday! Thanks again! D
I look at it this way! If you are willing to ask the question, then you are willing to learn. One thing I do remember is how frustrating it can be to learn something new if you don’t have someone to ask for help. You will get there too, just give yourself some time.
It is really no different than holding a door open for a stranger when they are walking behind you. 10 to 1 the next time they will hold the door for someone else!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend and try not to work too hard!

Willing to learn but not too sure my little brain can hold it all!
This week I am learning Corel X5, learning about viny cutters, and still trying to perfect heat press techniques!...Well, they say if you challenge your brain enough it can ward off Alzheimers...I will never get it at this rate!
Have a great holiday weekend too! I will be working but I think there will be a little dancing to Blues in there too :)
I think I may sit back and run a scan disk and defrag on my brain this weekend to free up some space. If I don’t I will need to get a larger one installed! LOL

Now that's FUNNY! Thanks! I needed a giggle today!!!
I just received my Winpcsign 2010 SW and need to install and learn it....but....Earl is heading my way and i'm sure that I'll loose my electricty. This will happen when I am sending a file to my cutter to test it. I think I have Mr. Murphy working here and he invokes his law just at the right time.
dbamuti,
You know there have been times when I wished the Vulcan mind meld was real and I could just link to a person’s brain and give them the information they need…for a small fee of course!

Chuck, make sure you are safe and do the install later!

We are doing exactly the same. I'm learning Corel X5 and have a black cat cougar cutter and geo knight heatpress and trying to learn them all espcially Corel X5 so I can enter the latest contest. I originally got the cougar for paper piecing and cutting rhinestone templates but there are so many possibilities. We should compare notes once in awhile ! I'm learning a lot in Corel and my interests are increasing quickly.
Cheers,
Sandi
