Depends on what you are looking to do. I purchased the Brother Scan and Cut and now wished I would have purchased the Cameo. One big advantage over the Brother is you can cut from other software. Cameo is good little cutter

cricut can only be used online

bookmark this site, it is one of the oracles at delphi for cameo

if you currently use a graphics program,
then it is worth it to buy the 'designer edition' upgrade for the cameo

there are many features with this upgrade,
better eraser & knife, rhinestone add-on, shear function, better ruler & grid, etc.
but the main one is the ability to import svg's from your graphics program

i got mine here (best price i could find and they were good to deal with)

i just picked up a used knk zing,
but have not had the chance to test drive it
definitely looks and feels impressive compared to my cameo

the nice thing about it is you could load 15" rolls of vinyl without trimming (like the 12" cameo or cricut),
and the down force is over 3x that of the cameo (750 vs. 210)
plus i like the embossing/engraving capabilities

Pretty much why I purchased the Zing instead of the Cameo or Scan-n-cut, most of the vinyl or twill we cut is on 15 inch rolls. I use the Zing for cutting twill, fabric appliques, shirt pockets, etc. It has a bit of a learning curve but once you understand it, it really works well.

For HTV and sign vinyl, we use a 24 inch Roland, easier than having to keep changing blades and settings constantly.

I have the Gcc I-craft which is craft cutter. I like but you won't find a ton of feed back. Only cutter I've ever owned so can't offer a comparison. Came with sure cuts a lot software which is user friendly.

Sounds interesting, Edward. Please give us a review of the product once you've had a chance to use it a lot. Can you replace individual blades or do you replace a blade unit?

it is individual blades
you can use clean cut blades in it as well (discount for forum members, and supposedly the best blade),
and you can use a roland blade holder (which seems to be popular, better control? easier?)

you can also get embossing and engraving blades for metal/wood,
one of the reasons i got it (embossed metal signs)

one of the first things i am going to do with it is print and cuts with jpss,
then some detailed/small htv cuts

it comes bundled with make the cut, and their forum seems to be the place for knk

Individual blades as mentioned above. We mostly use the fabric blade for cutting appliques out of cotton fabric or twill. I've found it cuts very cleanly, at least for twill and fabric, if I reduce the pressure slightly and cut tell it to cut twice. Takes a little longer but the edges come out very nice... We use it mostly for cutting greek letters. I have an Accucut die cutter but the dies are very expensive to get new ones in different sizes. Turns out the Zing in the long run was a cheaper option and it lets us cut pretty much any shape/size we need.

Good luck weeding JPSS. I tried it and failed. I rather cut a mask out of plain paper.

here you go

i never had trouble weeding or adjusting my cut settings,
it was more difficult dialing-in the registration reading (for cameo you need black, dark reg marks)

i have seen a vid and read some tut's on the zing contour cutting
looks pretty decent, the machine gets close and you manually fine-tune the last piece of the puzzle

i appreciate and like your tutorial on masking the jpss,
i was just re-reading it again yesterday and thinking about a more permanent solution
like maybe overhead tranpsparencies (we mainly do set designs so it would be nice to have a pre-made/available mask)

Thank you for the link.

You can try transparency. It is hard on the knife though. It is not as soft as HTV. It adds to the cost. Plain paper is dirt cheap. Pre-cut a stack of multiple mask for the same design. Transparency can probably be reused 2 or 3 times because after the second time the polymer will start to build up on the transparency. It will probably ooze out eventually as the build up thickens. Also the transfer paper will become difficult to remove from the mask due to build up. If you are going to do it please let us know how it turned out.
