Buyer Beware and Be Careful

I posted in this section because this involved a Heat press. I want to let you all know about a potential scam. A guy posted a Heat press for sale on Graig's list. He made arrangements to sell the press on Sunday to (customer #1). He then made arrangements to meet another guy (customer #2)and sold the press on Monday to him. He then sent a paypal invoice and got paid for the press from (customer #1). The guy didn't know that both potential customers knew each other. They were talking to each other and customer #2 was bragging to his friend(customer#1) about his new press. They discovered they had both been dealing with the same guy. One had bought the press and picked it up and the other had paid for the press later the same day by paypal. When the plot was found out and reported to paypal and The credit card company the transaction was cancelled. I wanted you all to hear about this and to be warned that a potential scam is always possible. If these 2 guys were not friends, one of them would have been several hundred dollars less. The guy selling the press wanted paid by money order or certified check, had this been done the money would still have been lost. The bottom line is when buying a item always protect yourself by either using paypal or a credit card. This will help you recover your money if need be. .... JB

Thank you both guys. Hope the scammer lost the press :D
I am constantly getting mails of people wanting to buy large quantities of items I sell. They make incredable offers. some of them have my mouth drooling. And this is the problem as they try to find gullable small business owners on the different forums. many of you guys post that oh business is so bad. Oh what can i do to mke it better. then the AO people find these poor souls and go after them.
You should never use a credit card or paypal or wire transfer OR any other type of payment, other than cash, to pay for something you found on Craigslist. That's just common sense.

I'm curious of why you say this.If the guy had not paid by paypal with a visa card and paid with cash, money order or cashier check the money paid would have been lost. I would think paying by paypal would be the safest way. ... JB

Jb, sorry to hear, glad it all worked out, cause one guy got the press and the other guy got his money back. Buyer beware is right, that's the name of the game anymore.

The safest way (if there is such a thing with Craigslist) is to pay cash and to pay only when you are seeing the item (and preferably, testing it) in person and picking it up.

I'm not trying to make light of your friend's situation, I'm just saying that I thought these things were common sense. I've bought and sold tons of stuff on Craigslist and that's the only way I've ever done business with those people. And I've never had a bad experience.
As someone who has sold items through Craigslist, I take only cash, and the buyer must pick the item up. I've had a few people ask why I won't ship. Well, you have to be careful as a seller as well.

The scam e-mails I receive for large t-shirt orders are almost always signed by Reverand somebody. It always gives me a chuckle.

Glad that guy with the heat press got found out, and the buyers didn't get stiffed.
I agree I would never send anyone money for something on craigs list. I would only buy from craigs list seeing the person and the item, having cash in hand. I normally dont shop there, that is what is nice here having the classified section, and being able to see how long someone has been around, being able to check how active they have been in the forum. You can get a good idea how reliable a deal is by the post count and quality of the posts.
I've sold several items recently on craigs for thousands of dollars and always require the buyer to pick up the item in person and give me cash at that time.

I've been contacted by several folks wanting to pay with money order and have somebody else pick up the item. No Deal!
The one guy did pick it up, he found it on graigslist. the other guy found it on the forum here. The bottom line is he thought by paying with paypal was safe. I guess we all have become so untrusting in todays world and truly this saddens me. I remember when your word meant something and a handshake was golden. Those days ar trully gone and this is sad. I just wanted all the people here to beware and be careful. .... JB
I saw this on ebay about three years ago with a roland PC60. There are folks out there to take your cash. Buyer be ware.
