I'm working on printing and have been testing the market a little. All age ranges just to see the reponse. An interesting point was brought up that I've always kind of wondered myself. When creating a logo for your clothing company should it relate to the name? Like Johnny Cupcakes being a cupcake or Apple being an apple. I have been set on the logo for 2 years but had a hard time finding a name. Now, I finally have a name which describes the company...but I'm doubting the logo. The logo is a version of hearts (girly hearts) that is used in every design. The way I see it is the name represents girly and the brands personality but the logo doesn't match the name (hoping I'm making sense here). It's not called ____ Heart or something like that. What is your take on branding done like this? I've looked up companies over and over again and I find alot more who's logo doesn't "match" the name and it works (glamour kills, neff, mttm). I need some direction so I can move forward....THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having the logo make sense, relating to the product your selling or the image you're trying to present to the world, is the much easier route. You want your customers to see or be attracted to the image and to find what they expect attached to it. Doing something apparently unrelated, like the Nike Swoosh, for a quick example, can obviously work, but in my opinion takes a lot more cash and marketing wherewithal to be successful with.

Marketing is the main strategy to make anything brand nothing more, logo doesn't matter. If your successful in your marketing campaign then which logo you use no matter. People like every logo if its bad or beautiful. The main thing is branding. Keep in your mind branding is more important than Logo according to me.

I think it might be cold feet...a little. Some of my favorite brands logos have nothing to do with the name...they just look awesome. My name is girly and so is my logo...I guess really it's my job to make it all relate. I just found it interesting that an older female that is out of touch on fashion was able to point something like that out.

You hit it right on the head.
Logo's should be distinctive, eye-catching and decorative.
Eventually after seeing the company name and the logo together enough they're associated in our minds.
Not many large companies or brands actually have logo's outside of their name stylized. Coke, Pepsi, GE, Ford, IBM, etc. Take a look at the Toyota emblem/logo - what has that got to do with Toyota, cars or anything else for that matter? But you notice it and once you've seen it and know it's on a Toyota car, bingo.

I guess I'm in the same boat as you about fashion, don't know much about fashion logo's, but with a few exceptions like the Nike swoosh, I'd imagine it's not much different, i.e. 'No Fear', etc.

As long as your logo is distinctive, attention getting and makes sense with the name/product (if your company was Peace on Earth Xmas Ornaments you probably wouldn't want a mushroom cloud in your logo) it's doing it's job. it's relevance will be established over time with association.
