Bought a Roland GX-24

Hi Everyone,

We just purchased a Roland GX-24 plotter and wanted to get some feedback. It was between the GCC, Graphtec and Roland the plotter is used but hardly used and picked it up for less than a GCC would have costed us brand new.

Anyway just wanted some feedback from members as to what to expect this is our first plotter and we're new to vinyl. Our primary purpose is to offer names and numbers on uniforms for our client. I realize there might be a learning curve but wanted some feedback from members here. Thanks

I fooled myself for years using Chinese plotters, i saved and got a GX24 its reliable and i think its pretty quiet compared to the chinkaneese ones ive had.

I use it for adding text only to the back of embroidered polos etc but as im sure your aware this is capable of doing a lot more.
In a nut shell i cant give you a pro cons of graphtec and gx24 but i can tell you that i would not part with my GX24 now i have it.
We have both a graphtec and a Roland versacamm and love them both. They run all the time.
I don't have a GX-24, but I do have another Roland Print+Cut machine (an SP300v bought new).

All my prior research on the GX-24 is that it was an extremely robust workhorse, the main issue I always seen mentioned on the forums of the past years of browsing has mainly been the price tag for a new machine. I don't think I've ever seen too many issues with it, usually most of the issues are people trying to get acquainted with the process of converting graphics into vector format to then cut. Since it sounds like you are new to this process, expect some hiccups and some learning curve (especially when you forget to weld fonts and end up with overlapping cuts and the like), with uniforms you will need to make sure to get in the habit of mirror'ing the image, or set this as your default if it's going to be the only thing you do. If you picked it up at a good price, then you probably have made a good investment, hopefully you had some test cuts and everything done before you signed the check/cc receipt, a standard practice before making any machine purchase.

My Roland SP300v is about 7 years old now and has had very few problems and I still use it on a fairly frequent basis over my bigger/newer print+cut setup (hp l25500+graphtec fc8000 54") because of its ease of use and stability.

Thanks everyone for your response yea primary use is for doing uniforms and such. It will take some time getting used to haven't gotten the plotter yet but will here in the next little while. One question I had is how do you guys know how to set the pressure to cut certain vinyl? Is that something stated by vinyl manufacturer or supplier?

The manufacturer gives you a recommended pressure which can be set very easily on the Rolands display.
I however have always chosen to exceed this pressure slightly to make weeding easier.

Absolutely love my gx24. Upgraded from us cutter mh871 and wow no comparison for me.
Good choice.I,too bought a roland gx.
I do dtg,and absolutely no experience with vinyl.
Within an hour after unpacking and installing
drivers,software,etc. i was making shirts.
Along with the cutter,i bought a test package
from Stahls.
Just got mine and still haven't had a chance to play with it. :(

I am a little disappointed in the instruction manual and how to info out there for the device. Given I've used crappy off brand cutter for years, I expect I can transfer some of the that knowledge to this device.

One thing I haven't quite figured out is the print cut feature. I'd like to order printed materials ready for contour cutting. Idea is to contract out the print function until business is sufficient to justify the printer... There's nothing I've found to explain how to do it.
