Like Dave I feel sorry for the innocent businesses that are affected, but...It is unfortunate that these few criminals give us all a bad name.
From a practical standpoint, this doesn't hold true. I'm sure the majority of citizens are legitimate, but the majority of those who will contact a foreign small business owner are not.My point is, Nigerians as a whole cannot be seen as scammers because a majority of the 140million nigerians are legitimate.
Personally I don't think it's easy at all. There are many, many ways for scammers to follow through on these frauds if you choose to engage with them, and they often take a significant amount of time to be uncovered. It's just never worth the risk. Its quite easy to deal with this sort of things- ask them to transfer the money to you and have your bank verify first before you ship. EASY.
Oh Well, i guess the only way out is for our lazy and corrupt government to do something about it.
In the mean time, we legit businesses and individuals have to carry this unfair and ever present evil burden of Nigerian scammers until it comes to an end.
I have never accepted a check and I never will. Just like you can write a check you can use your bank's visa debit card. I don't ship out of the US so I have never had this happen to me, and for the business I do here in the states 50% upfront when the order is placed, and the rest when the goods are delivered. No money, no merchandise, no excuses!i agree with thaitex- never agree to anything from anywhere till u receive atleast 50%confirmed payment
katrina and lewis,
You should never accept cheques. i definitely wont accept credit cards that have a delivery address in nigeria (or anywhere) and a billing address elsewhere.
When cash is transfered to your bank and your bank verifies the cash has hit your account, it cannot be recalled.
Anyway, be smart and always be cautious & If it sounds too good to be true or the slightest bit off, Delete!
That's not exactly true...Shipping in africa (or anywhere in the world) is ok as you get payment first. Paypal, money order, or as going postal suggests, Gold Coins . As long as you can have the cash in your bank account before you ship the item.
