best RIP software for color separations?

we have Wasatch SoftRip SP edition, but have difficulty getting fine lines/edges. not sure if it is a problem with the actual printer or user.

we are in the market to replace our 42" printer, so I'd like to know what is the best RIP software to use for printing films/color seps for screen printing.
we are looking at HP printers, fyi.
