I replaced the encoder strip put new capping station and pump assembly. It was doing this before doing the above, is there anything else that could be causing this except the print head?

This could be the printhead ribbon cable remove it and clean the connection with alcohol
this has happened to me before

Definitely bad ribbon cable!

Turns out the screw that holds the metal plate for the timing belt was completely stripped. It wouldn't tighten, went to a bigger screw and its working again.
