I'm ready to take a sledge hammer to my Epson 7610. I have never hated a printer as much as I hate that one. I'm looking for something with comparable features- pigment based ink, tabloid sized scanner and printing, paper tray rather than just a pass through. The Brother MFCJ6530DW seems to fit the bill, but I'd like to not go through what I've gone through with the Epson, so if anyone is using one I'd love to hear about it. How does it print on JPSS or Neenah Dark? Any yellow shift?
Thanks,
Anthony

i can't recall seeing anything with brother printers and their innobella inks

mgparrish is now using the hp pigment printers

you may be able to ask for a demo on jpss at the store and see what the results are like
or depending on their return policy, try it out for a week

i was reading something the other day,
it was for a program to temporarily disable espon's end of life death knell
the printer reaches x# of prints or age? and it literally shuts itself off,
and displays a message that your printer has given up the ghost

you can no longer print anything anymore until you take it to an epson repair facility,
but even epson does not recommend that because it is too expensive
they just tell you to throw it out and buy a new one
even if it was working perfectly 5 minutes ago, too bad

apparently if the planned obsolescence does not work as expected it has its own built-in suicide switch
a poison pill in its back molar to kill itself leaving you weeping in the corner with a suicide note from epson hq

Heck, I'd be relieved to get that message! It would mean the damn thing worked for a decent period!

Only the black (K) inks are pigment on the Brother printers. The CMY inks are dye. The reason for black pigment on some printers is that black is used for fast text printing mostly and the ink needs to dry faster as the pages stack or are handled quickly out of the printer they might smear if the ink isn't drying fast.

I think what you are referring to is the waste pad/tank full message (it might not say that specifically).

Most of the newer Epsons have a user replaceable "maintenance box" so the printer doesn't have to go back to Epson for that anymore.

For the older models that do have the "suicide switch" some vendors such as Cobra and others once offered a add-on waste tank to replace the "fixed system" waste pads. You can use that Epson utility to reset the suicide switch safely once the tank or pads are installed.

Edward said that you're using an HP pigment based printer. Which one, and are you happy with it?
I prefer the HP, it appears that the inks don't clog as often since heat is used to transport the inks and not electrical charge (like in Epson piezo heads)

The warmed inks through the head seem to make a big difference (viscosity is improved) . I'm in a dry dessert and only did one head clean spanning 4 or 5 sets of carts.

The ink wash just fine if pigment. Limited selection of pigment models and 3rd party inks though, but the larger carts the inks are not terrible expensive.

I'm on hold with Brother now, where the woman from India informed me that she can't tell me if it's dye or pigment based ink because that's confidential Brother information. I'm waiting for the call to be escalated. The reason I thought it was pigment was this on Amazon's description of the sister printer, although it doesn't appear on the one I'm looking at.

UPDATE: The supervisor came on finally and told me that it's dye based. So that's out.

Thanks. Which HP model? It's really difficult to identify ink type. Ink cost is an issue, of course, but is irrelevant if you can't print anything! I invested in a Cobra CISS for the 7610 and I'm ready to scrap the whole setup.

i too thought the brother's with innobella inks were all pigment

check here for pigment models (not sure how often they update though)

you may be able to find one cheap today!

my 7610 lasted 3 months after warranty period then made a horrible metal-on-metal sound while printing
and that was that, it never printed another page
became a boat anchor and now i have a ciss sitting in my shed (useless because i won't buy another)

i picked up a smaller epson cx7800 and will use that until i decide to either get an hp like mgparrish, or a laser

Edit: i found another list, more models here

I have an older model that will do 13 x 19, the newer ones that are pigment are 11 x 17, but they have larger carts sizes and ink is cheaper that way.

Click on the "Specs" and the "Ink and paper" tab

Thanks, Mike. I just ordered a 7740 which also scans 11x17- I've had to do that enough times to make it worth the extra. I'll pick it up in a little while and see what I have.
There's about 2 weeks left on my Epson warranty, so I might drive it over to the repair center with the original carts and see if they'll fix it, then try to sell it for a few bucks. Not sure that's worth more to me than going all Office Space on it!

Update on the 7740:
So far, so good. One feature making me crazy is that, like the Epson, this printer now wants me to enter into the printer what paper type and size I've inserted. I haven't yet tested what happens if I then tell the driver that it has a different paper. The Epson would just refuse to print until I went to the printer and changed the setting.
Overall initial impression is that this machine has a better build quality- paper trays are more solid and easier to operate, and the printer is quieter. Of course, that could be because the Epson had those grinding noises when it grabbed the paper.
This is the original photo and the resultant t-shirt (I forgot to mirror, but it didn't matter in this case). This is with stock inks and settings for best quality, matte paper. I haven't experimented with settings yet. Satisfactory, although I would like to enhance the colors a bit. (Not sure how to rotate the image, since the original IS rotated).

too busy making shirts to empty the dishwasher!
that is a good sign
soon, family and friends will fall by the wayside
and become an annoying speedbump to your next t-shirt project

i always wondered if that incredibly aggressive grab and print was the mechanism that killed my 7610,
it sounded like it was about to lift-off, or start launching icbm's
