American Apparel "may not be able to stay in business"

Thought I'd share this bit of news I ran across today:

American Apparel’s future is in jeopardy | Chicago Breaking Business

From the article:

The Los Angeles-based clothing maker, which in Illinois has locations in Chicago, Evanston, Oak Brook and Schaumburg, said it may default on loan agreements with its lenders, cited ongoing weakness in its business.

If that happens, the company said it may not have sufficient liquidity to stay in business for the next 12 months.
I use AA for most of my T-shirts since I like the quality and the feel, come in a wide variety of colors and since they are made in the USA (a strong component of my line). It'd be sad if I had to use a "made in China" brand for my T-shirts...

Yeah, they have a big shop in Los Angeles.

We don't use their product very much because our customers are very price sensitive and paying 2 or 3 times more for a t shirt is not supportable no matter where it is made.

Yeah I been to the LA factory it's HUGE! But I also think American Apparel is overrated and EXPENSIVE. There are lots of alternatives out there for cheaper and good quality. Take a look at Alstyle Apparel. American Apparel is just trendy but if you would a customer an american apparel style from different manufacture most wouldn't be able to tell they just assume American Apparel is the best because of its trendiness in southern california

American Apparel is a great brand yeah there is alternatives but AA Has set a standard in this tshirt world . Alstyle Has great shirts but there 1901 which is similar to AA is in know way even close to it the craftmanship in AA is over the top. There way of fitting the shirt is incredible. Things become trendy because there good not just beacause . The peolple who say AA is overrated are people who dont pay attention to the detail. Too bad it sucks to see another american manufacturing company go down.

Another casualty of the poor economy and lackluster recovery.
Actually, it would be unfair to blame this one on the recession.

American Apparel were in serious trouble before the recession hit. Financial analysts have this one pegged as mismanagement; a combination of pricey lawsuits, image problems, fashion trends moving away from them (a little), but absolutely above all: overly ambitious expansion.

The funny thing is I remember screenprinters getting annoyed at AA five years ago as they moved away from the wholesale base that had built them up, and concentrated on retail expansion. I wondered then if it would come back to bite them. It was a move that would have made sense if they'd shown restraint, but their over-reliance on the fickle current-fashion market resulted in too much overhead invested in expensive stores, and not enough sales to sustain it all.

Obviously the recession isn't exactly helping out, but no... the company failed because of Dov. A company selling staple basics everybody needs should be able to weather out a recession. Many people have seen this coming for years, he was just too arrogant to stand aside.

I wonder if some other company has any interest in buying the name and continuing their line of products, because i thought this was a very sought out brand and it will be sorely missed if it vanishes...

I don't know about anyone else, but if American Apparel were to go under It would be a terrible thing. American Apparel shirts are high quality shirts and anybody that doesn't think so, does not care about the details. The shirts fit well, they're an extremely soft feel and the colors, like black for instance, hold true through several washes. Alstyle is a good brand too, but sub-par to AA and have you washed a dark colored Alstyle Shirt.....Black turns into sort of black. On top of that, most of their stuff is imported. At least American Apparel are MADE IN THE USA!!!!! Even if some people think that, "they're too trendy" or "overrated," why would any real AMERICAN want ANY american manufacturer to go under. It's just bad all around.

lol looks like my post not all of it just the beginging.lol. weird..

AA is to blame they should have focused there attention on the wholesale market and kept the stores to only a few.... and should have also not limited there distibtors....the mismanagement of this company is in cmplete fault ... If AA is rescued by an investor or anything they should reaasigned all posotions... AA tried to create Excusivity in the wrong way....

I do not think it is always a case of putting all your eggs in one basket......I think sometimes business just goes where the market takes you....I never imagined that 70%+ of my business would be fridge magnets....But sales took off and I hung on for the ride....Now despite the fact 80% of effort is directed elsewhere the sales are just what they are....
