I researched both programs and ended up buying Alien skien. The reviews on it were good, and very user friendly!!

I have both and use both. Fractals pro seems to do a better job for me, less pattern distortion I guess. Plus you can add grain, sharpness, etc.

You will need at least one of the plugins.
