Hi all new to the forum and new to embroidery aswell. I am looking at starting a home embroidery business I am a complete novice so any advice will be greatly received. I am out of work at the moment so plenty of time to get stuck in and learn the craft and get the business up and going.

What type of machine would you recommend I go for to start Off? Should I go for a used one since I'm just starting out or go brand new? Budget to get up and going is between £5000 and £6500.

I was in your shoes 3 yrs ago. I started with a PR 655 but very quickly outgrew that. I run now tajima and happy machines. I really rate the Happy over the Tajima.

I would recommend the Happy Voyager 12 needle. It's a great price and has a large sewing field. Streets ahead of the Brother machines for almost the same money.

Midwest are the UK distributor for Happy machines.

Thanks for your reply the brother pr 655 is one of the machines I was looking at. Would i best to go for a reconditioned or brand new in your opinion? Been reading the forum and watching videos and trying to educate myself as much as possible before taking the plunge. Any other hints or tips greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you are mechanically inclined and can find a gently used machine at a good price that would be a good buy.
One advantage of the Brother/Babylock 6-10 needle machines is they are great for beginners. If you stick with the hoops that come with the machine, you really can't get in too much trouble. The more 'commercial' machines require a lot more experience or you can easily hit a hoop and break the reciprocator - been there, done that...

Another advantage is their size - they are small enough you can take them to a shop for repairs instead of paying a tech to come to your house/shop for work.

We've been running them for years, they are great machines if you can live with the smaller area and slightly slower speed.

William[/QUOTE]Honestly... Go for a happy Voyager. Absolute doodle to use, bigger sewing field than PR and a million times easier to sew hoodie backs etc (you load them frontwards which you can't do on a PR). Full colour screen, better functions, faster... And about the same price. Midwest would deliver and train you.

If you'd like more info pop me a PM

I quickly realised how limited I was with the PR and sold my brand new PR to get the Voyager. I now run the big 15 needle machines and they are so easy to use.
