adding company logo to custom shirts for discount

I get asked this more often than not:

If you put your logo on the shirt can we get a discount?

It doesn't happen too often on a normal custom order, but if it's for a sports team it does come up. The pros would be that it is solid advertising so long as we (the printers) are proud of the final product. The cons are that it reduces the revenue from the job AND adds extra labor.

I was thinking of making it 5% off with a sleeve logo, 10% seems like it would be too much. Something that looks classy. On a $300 order for a small <20 man team that would be $15 off. On a $2000 order for a 5k, that would be $100. The second idea was to make it a set amount, like $50 off. Which sounds better to you guys? Or are there more options I haven't considered?

Not only does it reduce the revenue from the discount applied but additionally with the labor and material of your logo, whether it be printed or vinyl. Will the gas station give you a discount on gas if you put their logo on your car window? You have to remember a rec league or school sport season isn't very long so that advertising you do on the shirts is not going to be out there long time. To be honest I think only those of us in this business pay attention to what is on a shirt. Anyone else is too focused on the kids. My opinion.

Agree w/ Mtnview, not enough ROI (return on investment), so understand the customer asking is just looking for a discount, better to throw in a few extra shirts, rather than the extra setup & labor for another print position.

Our name only goes on shirts when we are an event sponsor. We never offer a discount to the regular customer that comes in, someone in our area does it and we think it looks tacky.

Youth sports teams we wouldn't put our logo on. Adult teams we probably would if we WERE the team sponsor or a part of the team, but not just for the heck of it.

You would be better off to get a banner at their field than anything else.

We do not offer discounts at all as a company policy. Also, we do not enter sponsorships, as early on doing this, we were bombarded with every other client wanting a sponsorship. In a different twist, we have been asked by several clients who were doing events and listing other sponsors on the back of a shirt, if they could add our logo to the list (at no discount or cost to us, but based on our quality and service that they are proud to share to others)...from this, we have had significant referrals at no cost to us but good customer service.

We have the following on our website under the FAQ: "The Epileptic Monkey Logo is our brand.
It is standard on ALL apparel we produce. You will generally see this logo on the back collar of your apparel. However due to customer design specification, if the custom uses that space, we will find an alternative space for our logo.
PLEASE DO NOT ASK US TO REMOVE THE EPILEPTIC MONKEY LOGO."

You all need to remember that you need to represent your brand. I also have clients on a daily basis requesting discount if we put the logo on the shirt. And my answer is the same every time... our logo comes standard on the clothing.

As far as sponsorship is concerned, im with apparelcity on this one. From day one we refused to do any sponsorship as it results in every club wanting the same opportunity. We in the business to put food on the table.

How much business do you think you lose because of your policy? I know for a fact I would lose people if I told them my logo had to be on their garment. I've had quite a few people love ogio bags but pass on them because they didn't want the ogio logo on there.

I think one thing everyone should remember, is people don't come to us to help promote our brand they come to help promote their brand. I realize some won't care but I think a lot would!!

I agree with Jeron. If a customer pays for an order of shirts they deserve to have them the way they specified. If they don't want the logo of the printer on the neck they shouldn't have to have it.

Also I can't help thinking the name "Epileptic Monkey" might be unappealing to many customers, especially if the customer has a family member with epilepsy.

Exactly my thoughts. You would be better off asking permission and only putting it on stuff peopled approved of.

But I'm still of the opinion that you will receive more business, referrals, promotion for your brand if you give someone an excellent product, and customer service with exactly what THEY want vs your logo that most people won't see anyways.

Sorry I've gone a little off topic... but for the OP I typically won't put my logo on anything unless it's a team or something of that nature along with other sponsors. I also think it looks tacky otherwise.

You chaps need to remember that we do not insinuate anything with our name The Epileptic Monkey. Its something different and it sticks. We shed absolutely no disrespect to anyone with epilepsy.

As far as losing customers, we have not had any problem. Bearing in mind that we specialize in professional fishing apparel and our artwork seems to be way above bar here in South Africa, so the clients seem to stand for our policy.

Kind Regards
