I've never understood why anyone would think any of the work I've seen of his is all that great--and I have seen much more than a few of "his" pieces.

I think why I'm disappointed could be summed up in his own words:

"I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They're so beautiful. Everything's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_warhol#cite_note-38

I'm the first to say that art, it's value, social significance and the power of the visual is oft times underrated. But there are extremes (LOL). And I do believe that art isn't just about the piece, but the process behind the piece. To me a urinal mounted on a wall is more art because of the thought process and idea of it being art, than the urinal itself.

But to put a price (an exorbitant price!) kinda profanes the notion of art and makes it seem more like a scam.

He should've added "...and plastic pays well"

LOL!

but... were you around when he created them?

he was breaking new ground. that's what made his work famous.. and then he became famous, so his work is wanted.

it doesnt appeal to me either.. but i understand why its sought after.

if you are THAT loaded with cash, i can see the allure of having your dinner guests over and saying, "oh, by the way, would you like to see the andy warhol i picked up over the weekend?"

then it could all be about the bottom line.. money. investment..

37 million today.. imagine what it'll fetch 10 or 20 years down the road.

art is worth what the buyer is willing to pay. and not a penny more.

let me throw in a story i LOVE to tell ..

about 20 years ago, when i first opened my computer store, my wife and i went to the store late one night.

while walking around, we happened to pass through the toy aisle. she saw fingerpaints and asked if she could get some, because she had never used finger paints before and always wanted to.

sure honey, you can have some fingerpaints. lol.

so she goes home and with her paints and a pad of paper she starts finger painting.

within an hour all the paper and all the paints were gone.

she was bummed and wanted to paint more.

as a joke, i said, she should body paint. we have a few gallons of latex paint in the garage and some white sheets.

well, she took it literally, and before i knew it, a white sheet was laying on the floor and she was covering her naked body with latex paint and rolling around on the sheet. hand prints, foot prints, butt prints, yes, boob prints..

i threw in a few foot prints and handprints just to make her happy.

in the end, we signed it with a junction of our names jason & christina = jastina

as a joke, and a surprise for her, i hung it on the wall of our computer store the next morning.

it was there for about 2 weeks, and i got a kick out of telling customers the story behind it.

but then, one day a customer came in. and starting raving on it. he asked who it was and i said it w a jastina original. he went into a whole spiel about him being an art collector. he was freaking out that i had a jastina orginal. he claimed that he had searched the world over for a jastina original. and he just had to have it right now, at any cost.

and the bidding commenced.

i did my very best not to laugh at this toolbox that was going to buy my wifes finger painting while claiming to be an art collector.. he must have spent an hour telling me all about jastina, and how she was famous for painting with latex on sheets, and using her own naked body as the brush, blah blah blah. i mean this dide was literally making crap up as he went along.

in the end....

he left with his prized jastina original.

and i was all to happy to deposit his 5 grand into my bank account.

The funny question to me about this is--was HE around when most of these were created? ;)

Probably an even more insane amount. Unless at some point there's a mass shift in consciousness in the art world or if the influential voices deem Warhol passe or such.
Or better yet someone realizes that $37M can save a whole lot of people's lives.
