I need to move a 541 down a filght of stairs and I can't do it without tipping it on its side so that either the back or front of the machine is facing the floor during carrying. If I remove the heads and the waste tray and install the blank ink cartridges, can this be done? What other precautions need to be considered?

Has anyone ever done this?

I bought it used and have been using it for 2 months without any issues... very nice.

There is no warranty and I'd find it hard to believe that something built this rock solid can't be tipped, but i will call Brother and ask them. BTW, we used to have a Brother 416 single head embroidery machine and that thing was as solid as a rock and heavy... I'd have to believe the apple didn't fall from that tree. But again, I'll call them and update this post if I do it.

Thanks everyone!

If you have the manual it should have unpacking instructions that include unlocking the platen bed. You would want that locked back down. No pressure or lifting with the bed. As said contact the dealer

Did you have to turn it on the side to get it into the current location? As mentioned above, you can remove the back panel (the part that sticks out on the back) and the printer should fit through a 32" or 36" wide door - don't remember which one it is.

I actually was talking about this same thing about the GT-782 printer with two Brother techs last week and they both said that you could tweak the rails that the print head carriage rides along. That could lead to a grinding noise and will hurt the print quality. Both of the techs recommended not turning the printer on the side. I am not sure if the same thing applies to the GT-541 printer, but I would do everything possible not to turn the printer on the side.

Hope this helps.

I did not have to turn it on its side to get it into it's current location... the door was wider. If I put it where I'd like it would be next to the conveyor dryer.

I will call Brother and ask them about bending the rails etc.

Thanks,

As a Brother dealer I'm probably not allowed to recommend turning it on its side.

But unofficially, I don't see it would be a problem. Make sure you lock the carriage in place, just slip a piece of cardboard down the side so the carriage can't move at all. Also just watch for ink draining out of the waste tube. Even if you take the waste cartridge out, there is going to be ink sitting in the tube.

If you are worried about the platten, its easy to unscrew.

When you are carrying the machine, just note the outer panels are NOT structural. Hold it by the edging around the base, all of the mechanics sits on a heavy steel frame in the base. Once you've moved it just make sure to clean out any ink that has spilled inside and do a cap clean.

And don't wear good pants that day.
