So I had a rip design which I did in black and white t-shirts. The black t-shirts came out nice and detailed, I used separation studios. But when I did a 4 color process on white tees, the image printed very dark and oversaturated. Also loss alot of details that were white. Why did this happen?

If this was seped properly with a white base for darks then you have to print the white base even on white. For CMYK prints I print a white base even on white for consistent prints

Sorry for the late response, for the 4 color job I didn't separate any colors, all I did was print the 4 cmyk channels no editing. The only print I used separation studio for was for the black shirts. Also I don't think its possible to separate 4 color process image with separation studio since theres no black channel. Unless you can create a black channel in separation studio is that possible?

how many colors was it on the dark? just another which was white underbase? plastisols? same screens both jobs (minus the white underbase)?
I used different screens for both jobs. For the dark shirt I got it down to 4 colors and the 5th screen for the white underbase. So total 5 screens to make the simulated process image.

If your doing a CMYK print most process inks have a profile to apply to the file. I use a rip to print so all the dot gain controls are done there. Before printing with the rip I never used any dot gain controls or adjustment besides the ink profile with great results but every shop is different.

What brand of CMYK ink do you have. Look and see if they have a profile. The profile will tell illustrator how to output the colors to accurip

Yes. They have the color profiles right on their page for the CMYK process inks. I don't use seperation studio but I would guess it has the profile embedded in the program as it uses it own ink set.

I see, one last question, for dark shirts I am using ryonets process inks but it doesn't have blacks, so pretty much I can only do photo images on black shirts since I can use the blacks of the shirt to compensate for hairs in the photos. Is there a way to print photo images on dark shirts other then black?

I figured out your talking about the spot process inks. You just use the 700 series black for your black ink.
