Looking to put together a setup to burn large screens, approximately 60 x 72 inches, putting the light source approx 93 inches away (a good distance).

Would a 1000w metal halide (with or without a reflector) be able to do the trick? I realize that burn times will be significantly longer than an Olec or similar. Unfortunately an Olec is just not in the budget right now. Thank you.

Absolutely! You'll have to get a multi-spectrum bulb, like the GW111, but it will work. You may have to add a fan to blow the air so the glass stays cooler. I have an old 1000w Nuarc machine that we used for years with photopolymer and diazo based emulsions. The only reason we switched to an LED is because the MH unit shorted and caught on fire, otherwise I'd still be using it.

At that distance 1000w will take forever. unlike a exposure unit that is 12-36" away. if you built a reflector that would allow was 4-5 ft away you would be able to burn in a few minutes. at 8 ft I think it would be about 30+ min. Tried this years ago printing 5 ft posters, I ended up finding someone with a 5000w olec to burn screen for me
