Hey All,

To avoid repeat questions I have been researching this section of the forum. I have read just about every post up until page 5.

I am taking on my first event in a week and therefore I wanted to hunt down any further information.

The consensus is that you can expect 1% of attendees to purchase your shirts.
- I find this an insane figure to generalize. Does it actually hold any water? My particular event has 10k people coming. I thought I was low balling at 5% but this may be a serious novice mistake. I was prepared to buy 1000 shirts. I have my local wholesaler ready to accept the blanks back at a 7.5% restocking fee. I will only pre print about 200 shirts. I am bringing the screen-press to the event to make more as well as attract attention.

This is a Beer and Wine festival as well so I expect people to be a little looser with their money.

I am also going to prepare a bunch of heat transfers for quick transfers as well. Is the best way to deal with heat transfer to have someone in town make them or to screen print them on my manual machine myself? I have read that heat transfers don't work well on dark colors. Is this true?

Also I was originally going to make 8 designs on 3 different colors. Half v-necks half crews. After doing the logistics a bit that is just laughable. Now I'm thinking 2 to 4 designs on only crew necks, 2 colors.

Any advice on colors? I was thinking white and grey. The issue is that for some reasons white shirts look a bit cheap and they may be hard to persuade people to pay $20 in my personal opinion. Any truth to this?

Sorry for 21 questions and thanks for taking the time to read through this whole thing.

Events like this run "hot" and "cold".....So no matter how much planning you do, coming up with the right answer is more luck than skill.....

As far as transfers.....There are lots of suppliers that do plastisol transfers that work well on dark shirts.....
Plastisol Transfers - T-Shirt Forums There are some sticky threads at the top of this forum.....

And right now this is a heck of a deal... 15 cent One Color Heat Transfers

So crazy, the 1% figure was right on the money. 100 shirts for 10k people. We turned a small profit but more importantly our screening printing business got a lot of exposure. In face so much that we are scrambling to fill orders. I'm just shocked still at this conversion rate. I thought I could beat the odds but once again I have been humbled haha.

Selling something requires a perfect storm of events to happen. Attendees need to notice your booth. They need to find what you're selling attractive. The price point has to be attractive. They have to be in the mood to spend money that day.

Converting 1% of passersby to buyers is a pretty good ratio and I would say most people would be happy with that. If you go to the festival every year and people start to know your business, then the percentage rate may climb, but 1% for a first time display at an event is definitely reasonable.

A small profit and more orders than you ever had before sounds like a great end to this event! Congrats for having the willingness to try something new and make things happen!

EnMartian,
I guess when you put it like that I should consider myself very lucky!

tcrowder,
Thanks for the positive encouragement!
No worries. I just turned 50 years old and am trying to drive home to my 20 year old son to not live life thinking "What If".

I think it is great to see someone like yourself put it out there and try to make things happen. You my friend will never have to say "What If".

Just jumping on an old thread... wanted to say it's crazy how the conversion ratio of 1% is so spot on. From my website to event sales... you can pretty much bank on 1%. However, during the month of december I noticed a pretty heavy spike and was converting about 4% which was nice. Its weird though, kind of uncanny. I swear its like were robots or something lol.

I've done all this without advertising. I wonder if advertising has the power to convert a higher ratio of traffic in addition to an increase in traffic. I'm almost certain it does, and hopefully will be testing it out soon.

Any advice out there on how to convert a higher ratio? (besides having sweeter designs lol)

Hell yeah puma10, good going by the way. I'm new at this and did my first event in August last year too. Had no idea what i was getting myself into.. yet totally expected to blow it out the waters like you lol. Went on a 36 hour printing run... stuffed my little civic with about 500 shirts... then sold right around 100 as well. Haha... great experience and have been chugging along ever since.

I think the type of advertising affects the conversion percentage. Also are you selling your own brand of clothing at the event or are you a screen printing selling some designs you put together? That's also going to affect things in different ways. A local screen printing company can appeal to the audience with the Local Small Business pitch. If your selling your own brand it's a little harder. The customers have to see the value in your brand and connect with it.
