“BREAK” Out of the Box With Heat Transfers

"BREAK" Out of the Box With Heat Transfers

My article, This Ain’t Yo Mama’s Iron On in the inaugural edition of the T-ShirtForums newsletter may have opened your eyes to exactly what a heat press can do. The effects, styles and opportunities are tremendous.

As you may know heat applied graphics encompasses a lot of technologies. One is the process of a vinyl cutter in conjunction with heat applied films to create customized apparel. To demonstrate the technique, we’ve put together an exclusive video for T-ShirtForums as part of our weekly Tip Jar series.

Watch and see how we “break” out of the box associated with heat transfers by combining metallics, foils and a wrap around over the seam print all on one t-shirt. We hope you get inspired to join us....not with the actual break dancing, but the decorating. Enjoy!

Josh Ellsworth is General Manager of one of T-ShirtForums Preferred Vendors, Stahls’ CADCUTdirect.com, and a regular contributor to t-shirtforums.com with expertise in heat applied graphics. Through his work he has visited some of the largest apparel decorators in the US and in OZ. To read more of Josh’s articles or to watch him on video visit JoshEllsworth.com

Re: “BREAK” Out of the Box With Heat Transfers

The wrap around printing looked awesome. I know very little but have been looking around the site to figure out what technologies to use and how to incorporate them in my best designs. What's the difference between the self cutting films then applying foil, and the ones that you have to weed and then the one pull weed like used in the video?

Thanks.

The one used in the video already has the foil layer and adhesive in one...so its real easy to cut and apply just the areas that you want. The other foil method typically involves screen printing an adhesive or possibly even cutting a film and then heat pressing a hot stampl foil overlay sheet over the design. You cold peel the foil and it sticks to all of the vinyl/adhesive. So I would say the CAD-CUT foil and metallics are better for overlapping colors and the screen print foil process is better for detail and some varying effects.
