Default Digital Direct and shirt quality

I'm wondering if anyone has tried or seen samples of SS's Digital Direct printing on their different shirts. Their own brand, Gildan and American Apparel. My impression from customer service is that Gildan "soaks in" more because it's 100% cotton, but does that mean the ink runs or it that it gets deeper into the fabric. Is it going to look "vintage"?
And how do the American Apparel compare to the SS Ts? Is it worth the extra $4?

thanks for any help.
