Commercial builds have used stepper motors and so have many DIYers. And some have also used conveyers that work well. Friction builds limit you to a very light platen which is difficult to achieve...

Yes it can be done. What some builders have done is use a toggle switch that separate the motor connection from the main board while using another power source to drive the motor in reverse.

No you don't but you get more realistic colors with a rip. You can also compensate for adjustments and such with a rip. You definitely have more control.
