If you are looking to go past a regular size printer, but you dont' want to spend a fortune on the 17", 24" or 42" you can always go with an Epson1400 or equivalent.
The Epson 1400 can print 13"x44" (so 8.5x11, 8.5x14, 11x17, 13x18, and 13x19 films) and You can usually find them for around $200 now.

I just picked one up a few weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. Even with the standard ink it still prints darker than my last printer. I picked up a single Blackmax cartridge to replace my regular black one and that has helped too.
You can also get a CIS(continuous ink system) or refillable cartridges for your epson. I don't know if there is a bulk system for the blackmax, but I'm considering the CIS because we are going to be selling prints of my girlfriend's art as well as CD portfolios of her art. The Epson1400 will print onto printable CD/DVD's.

YOu can get a full blackmax system from Ryonet which includes something like:
-epson 1400 printer
-6 black max cartridges
-Accurip (Mandatory for using all the blackmax cartridges)
-200 sheets of Waterproof film (I think that many)
There might even be a DVD included.
The total is like $1200, but that's not too bad for a printer that will be able to print perfect dark films and super fine detail half tones.

I'd also check out what other people say about their wide format printers. I heard the other ones from epson are just as good if not better.

Thanks for the reply! Where did you get the blackmax cartridge?? Would the quallity be bad if i just print from my film straight from photoshop to my printer? My designs are basic and solid colors.

I got my black max cartridge from Ryonet at the ISS tradeshow in AC. I don't know if they sell individual cartridges on their site or if you have to buy the full set(which would be useless without a RIP software like Accurip).
I would think you would be fine to print straight from photoshop. I prefer to print from illustrator, but if the resolution/dpi/whatever is high enough you should get a good print in photoshop.

I will reply for you. I will say that most people use the Epsons. Smaller shops at least - and hobbyists. Typically because they are compatible with most of the RIP software. Myself, I check Craigslist and find the Epson 1400 and workforce 1100 for usually less than 100 dollars. So, the answer if you are a small producer for films would be the large format Epson

Red face Re: Best printer for film printing

So I could purchase the Epson 1400, buy the sheets of film 13" wide, and use the ink "it comes with"?
Would I need anything else to print film?
