Default Difference between Epson 1400 and Epson 1400 Blackmax

I am new to the business and it sounds as if the Epson 1400 is the way to go. We will be printing on waterproof film. There is a big cost difference between just a stand alone Epson 1400 vs. the Epson 1400 Blackmax from Ryonet. Any thoughts on pros and cons between them? I appreciate the help.

I have the Epson Blackmax r1900 with accurip....
I beleive the difference is the regular epson has color cartriges and the blackmax has replaced all the color cartriges with an all black system...which means every print head will print black...for a more opaque positive...plus I beleive the blackmax comes with accurip...which you will need to do halftone and screens...i dont think a regular home printer can do halftones.....hope this helps

The base printer is an epson 1400 in either case, just the printer can print good quality transparencies up to 13x19". If you use just the printer you will have to use standard epson ink, there is one black ink cartridge and 5 color cartridges, remember, you're printing black on the transparency film so you are only using one cartridge. I have heard that the best settings to use for this are premium quality photo paper and best quality picture in the standard epson driver. What are the cons to JUST the 1400. You only use one black ink, your printer uses the color inks for head cleanings so it still uses color inks if you are not using them for printing, eventually you have to replace $20 epson cartridges you are not even using. The epson 1400 printer cannot print half tones with out a rip, so you would be limited to spot color designs, NO GRADIENTS OR FULL COLOR IMAGES. The blackmax looks like it has the AccuRip, a VERY good rip software, they load it with all black ink which the rip controls, so that appears like you dont have to waist color cartridges, plus if you are printing with all black ink it goes faster and prints darker which is optimal for exposure. AccuRip allows the printer to print dark films fast, print half tones for gradient images, and print all black ink. Looks like the package comes with 200 sheets of water proof films, pretty good deal on that too! Hope this helps!

I have just bought an Epson 1400 with BlackMax and AccuRIP software. I love the look. Halftones look good. The black is BLACK. The downside from me is and I'll be making a phone call Monday Morning, is that I printed a test page, a 2in sq image, and 2 stripes 1inx8in long. now it says I need "Black" ink. I hope there is no problems with it. If anyone can help me out over the weekend, I'm open.
Thanks

A CIS is a Continious Ink System - Bulk System basically.

The issue with running all the carts as black is you have to for sure have a RIP software.

I just got the epson 1400 today. I didnt buy a black max, just the stock epson 1400. So just now was the first film print. I used waterproof flim, i set the paper settings to premium photo paper and used the advanced printer settings "epson vivid" and... it worked great. passed the light test. im pretty happy

Hmm. so no problems? so you dont have to say "print all black" or change the colors? you just use a stock 1400?

I use a regular 1400 with Claria Inks. Artwork is all black. Print Best Photo using waterproof film. No problems with exposure. Also use PS for half-tones.

cool kevin. you said use ps for halftones. do you use any rip software? it seems like the same thing can be done with halftones without any special rip software in ai or ap. what you do think?
