Reaching an Independent Sales Rep

Hi Everyone:
I am trying to locate an independent sales rep to discuss our brand with. Currently we have not had much luck online, and was wondering if anyone had any advice or input on how to reach someone.

We have had success with the brand ourselves, but do not have the time to devote to contacting retailers one on one. Would it be more beneficial to attend a trade show, or locate a sales rep who could also benefit off of our brand?

Thank you!

Re: Reaching an Independent Sales Rep

Independent reps usually work within territories. So try doing some Google searches for "New York Apparel Sales Reps" or "New York Apparel Mart" and stuff like that. Other good areas to search are Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Another trick is to check out the websites of brands that you think are similar to yours. They may have reps listed on their sites. If so, contact them about your brand.

Generally speaking, reps want to work with established brands. So make sure you are ready to supply consistently high quality product at high volume and can offer profit margins that established retailers are used to getting from vendors.

Exhibiting at trade shows are a great way to make retail contacts. But it can be expensive. That's the value of working with a rep, so they can do the show for you.

Many of your designs infringe on existing intellectual property and major licensing agreements. You may have done this already, but it's probably a good idea to consult an attorney before you start supplying retailers with product that may get you sued.

Thank you! This is very helpful. Regarding your legal advice, we are very aware and are monitoring our designs and relationships very carefully. I have already started researching local sales reps in a more centralized demographic such as Boston, NY, and LA.

Do you happen to know of any specific resources or contacts in either of those three locations?

Thanks again!

No, I don't know of any specific resources or contacts. But if you search around a bit, you should find some fairly easily. Another good search keyword is "(City name) Apparel Showroom."

Finding a sales rep is easily within the top 3 questions I get from start ups. Toward that end I published these on my site:
How to find a sales rep -circuitously
How to find a rep pt.2

Obviously the best way is always a one on one referral but this rarely happens in a public forum. Good luck!
