Default Epson DX5 - All channels OK BUT Magenta!

Having a problem with my NeoFlex (the original one).

All channels are firing brilliantly except Magenta!

When I do a Print Test I just get a few broken lines of Magenta rendering the whole printer useless at present.

I've done the following:

Flushed the head with ease
Primed the dampers
Checked the flow of ink to the dampers
Carried out a Powerclean

Every channel works except Magenta - just a few broken lines.

Electrically can just one channel give up?

Any suggestions?

It's impossible to guess without knowing the printhead history.
If it's not a clog or trapped air, then it is internal physical damage.

Thanks Bob,

It's strange how one moment it's working and the next ……

I've changed quite a few printheads over the years but had a crap time with them recently! I usually buy 2nd hand 2880's and remove the printhead, they work graet but just for a few months!!

I've done the same a couple of times, but I produce thousands of prints per printhead, so I don't mind buying a new printer for parts.

Are you using any cleaning solutions containing ammonia?
A lot of people use things like that and it works great, until the printhead fails.

If I knew a new head was going to last longer, I'd probably go for one but, I be really p****d if it failed in a few months! It's unusual to have blocks with any of the colours - far more common the white.

I usually have a spare 2880 ready to wreck but this time I'm out of luck.

I'll likely remove the head completely tomorrow and have one final gentle flush both ways, if it doesn't work, I'll push the ink back to the cartridges and wait.

We use Image Armor inks as the white was a little more friendly than the DuPont but the DuPont gave a better white in my opinion.

I know, and this is one of the reasons I stopped printing white.

The Dupont produced better white than ImageArmor ?? I think you were using the wrong Dupont ink. I did that too once, and nearly killed a printhead.

What printer do you have Bob? I guess you're printing light colour shirts?

Always used DuPont Artistri inks from the beginning - used to import from All America at 50 litres a time.

For production I use P800 conversions, where I print light and dark garments, over screen-printed base.

Yeah... the P5000 CMYK works great, but not the white. Printhead killer... At least for the DX5/DX7 printheads. The ImageArmor white is much better, but still a pain in my opinion.
I get around 30,000 shirts per printhead, but with white ink I would expect 1/4 of that.

Hey I know you said you primed the dampers no problem have you tried just replacing the magenta damper? I had a problem on my neo1 with the yellow that sounds similar to yours and I was able to prime the damper no problem but was getting a lousy nozzle check. on a last ditch effort I replaced the damper and on a whim i pushed some air into it and saw there were small particulates on the internal screen turned out the force applied to prime it was big enough to overcome it but not enough to make it to the print head. just remove it and push out the ink over a trash can and see if you see any junk in there might be the whole issue there.

Thanks for the reply James.

I think I've done most but change the damper - I have a few in stock so will try that before I give up on it. I haven't yet removed the head, I managed to 'waterfall' it while connected and it seemed fine. To give it the best chance, I will remove and thoroughly clean and whatever.

This has happened before but on the Cyan channel.

Thanks

John

Before you take off the print head to soak/ waterfall just pop out the damper and see if there is junk on the inside just push some air through with a syringe to clear out the little bit of good ink in there. I have had success in the past with something like this and I was desperate where I was able to clean out the damper with some cleaning solution and a whole lot of distilled water. just until the debris inside cleared up worked for a long time after that too.

This situation is exactly why I keep saying that weekly maintenance is important, especially if you do high volume. I simply switch to cleaning solution every Friday, and back to ink on Monday. This way everything is kept clean, and my printheads work until they die from material fatigue.

The distilled water is a good idea, and works just as good as the flushing solution. The only difference is that you should not keep pure water in the system for extended periods of time.

Well, here's an update:

Yesterday I spent quite a few hours methodically trying to recover the Magenta on my printhead.

The print area had a thorough clean.
Flushed the Magenta lines.
Cleaned and refilled the cartridge.
Replaced the damper & primed.
All the time the printhead was soaking in cleaning fluid.
With clean fluid, I reverse flushed ALL lines.
I then flushed all lines with cleaning fluid - all channels showed perfect.
Checked the cables & reconnected the printhead.
Carried out a powerclean.
Printed a test pattern.
All but the magenta line was perfect.
Now given up on the head as I believe it's an electrical issue in the head .

Unless anyone has any other suggestions - will need a replacement printhead.

Cheers

John

I do have a suggestion...
1. Get a donor printer
2. Swap the printheads.
3. Grab some storage fluid and add a little bit of ink in it (see step 5 why).
4. Fill it the donor printer with that storage fluid.
5. "Print" a few pages every day and then a pattern test.
If the printhead starts working, seal it and keep it as a spare.

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't been able to install the 'failed' printhead in the donor printer yet - but will do.

I have an Epson 9800 wide carriage! I removed the printhead from it this morning and fitted in my NeoFlex - one powerclean later and a nozzles firing perfectly This time it was the magenta not working, previously it was cyan on both occasions, fitting a replacement printhead fixed the issue.
