Angry Broken Dongle - No Replacement from Mimaki

I currently have a Mimaki 604D with a damaged dongle. I have attempted repeatedly to request a replacement dongle from Mimaki as well as several dealers. My machine will not work without the dongle and so I am without the use of my machine. Mimaki will not provide a replacement and offered me the only solution of buying a new rasterlink software package for $3000!

This is extortion and for this reason I will never purchase another Mimaki product. Prior to this event I would have spoken highly of this machine but to treat your customers in this way has really turned me negative.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Physically damaged - epoxy resin might cure it.
Electronically dead - need a new dongle. Wasatch (for example) charge about $50 I think?
The dongle is your proof of ownership it should be replaced at reasonable cost.

Thanks for the response, I will look into an alternate rip software as a secondary option.

I avoid dongle anything at all costs for that very reason. Considering a dongle might cost .10c for it to be made. Its sad you cant send yours back as proof you still have it and is damaged so they can replace it for a reasonable price.

Any Mimaki dealers that can shed any light on the replacement of dongles?

As a side note to this I was terrified of this very thing happening to my Fastrip dongle. Being plugged in to the usb port it had already been hit more than once and slightly bent. So I got a usb extension cord and plugged it into the dongle then put the dongle inside a small tupperware "cage" with padding around it. now it can sit on the desk protected and when I need to unplug it I am only unplugging a cheap cable not the wear and tear on the dongle itself. Maybe this will save someone else from this fate.

Later,
Kip

I recommend using an extension cable, if the PC gets stolen the thieves generally rip or cut the wires, leaving the dongle behind and stealing a cheap PC.

Yes, good suggestions from Kip & Dave.

tschaffn, where are you located, and who is your Mimaki distributor? Have you contacted Mimaki Japan directly?

A security dongle is very common for industrial type software. The security is for the software company to make sure you purchased the software from them and are not using a pirated version. That is why you have to have the dongle that is included with the software plugged into your computer in order to use that software. Each dongle has its own unique identification number burnt into it. The software has to find and match that ID number.

We have dongles with the EZ Artist software that we sell. If you lose the dongle then you have to pay for a new software set since the software company considers that it is giving you another set. The software is considered to be the dongle. However, if you somehow damage the dongle, and have the physical dongle available to be returned, we only charge for a replacement dongle. That is normal procedure for most software companies. It would be very strange for your company to insist that you need to buy all new software if you have the damaged dongle and can return it to them. They should be willing to replace the damaged dongle with a new one and only charge you the cost of the dongle. You should make sure they are aware that you have the damaged one and that you can return it to them for a replacement.

I appreciate all of the feedback and suggestions. My resolution to this predicament was to find an electronics repair shop locally and have the dongle rebuilt. I was fortunate that the electronics component was operable and was able to get the dongle working again. As a side note; Mimaki was aware I had a damaged dongle and was still unable to replace because my version of the software was to old and they no longer supported that version (V2 2005). Thanks again for all the help.

Smile Re: Broken Dongle - No Replacement from Mimaki

Too bad you didn't contact me directly I am sorry I didn't see your post before now I could have told how to get around the broken dongle without having to get it repaired. I have been a Mimaki Dealer since 2004 and probable have more knowledge about these printers than any other dealer. The reason is the 604s are the only Mimaki Printer I sell and have sold about 30-40 of them. I offer free phone support to anyone who buys supplies from me. Regards Steve

Dongle or not, software support for older versions, or lack thereof, is standard now. Witness Xp. Kind of aggravating, but we had to go with the flow and keep our versions of all our programs current.

Aggravating? Yes. Fair? Maybe. Costly? Can be. We use ai and Corel, and our 5 Corel is getting us spammed to upgrade. They offer reasonable upgrade cost early on, but usually have issues on early versions. So there is no good answer. I do understand they need to have their programs work with the new os , so maybe blame the os guys.
