Default Sorry Noob question transferring paper

If I print a design and it only uses a portion of the paper do I have to hand cut it out or does it appear clear? Also is there a printer that can also plot around the design printed?

Depends on what type of transfer paper is being used. A different type of transfer paper is needed for black or dark colors and those papers leave around the the box when heat pressed.
If you got your paper from a major distributer give them a call. Most transfer paper used for white cloth doesnt need a plotter to cut around a image because only the ink goes into the shirt.

As of the printer/cutter you will be most likely be better of with the Roland or Graphtec cutters but their kind of expensive. I trust the Roland Cutters more since they are known to have a really good service and customer support

If the ink is only going to the shirt then what you mention is actually sublimation transferring, in that case the ink actually doesn't transfer, the sublimation dye used in that ink is what transfers when the substrate is heated.

But this forum section is for inkjet heat transfer paper. In this case the inks are printed on a plastic carrier paper (clear if for light garments, white if for dark garments) and the printed plastic "carrier" releases onto the shirt. In effect these are "stickers".

Only plastisol (screen printed transfers) can release only the inks, not transfers made with a desktop printer. "Weedfree" type papers which are available on laser still release the plastic carrier, but only in areas where there is printing.

The "clear" plastic carrier "box" will show less on whites, and some papers like JPSS it is really not noticeable on a 50/50 white tshirt. Light non-white colors always show the "box" and opaque transfers (white) for dark shirts then the "box" is white and will always show.
