Default NEED IDEAS please! For inventory reduction

Hey everyone.

So over the past few years we've built up quite a bit of odds and ends from plain shirts, performance tees, hoodies and such. We've purchased another local company and have their inventory as well. Lots of blanks and lots of printed school apparel.

I'm looking for some good ideas that have worked for some of you on getting rid of this inventory fast!

Looking forward to hearing your ideas from fellow printers and store owners. Thanks a lot!

Hmmmmmmmmmm. I wonder if you could do a "mystery box" thing.

I did see a mystery box as an idea. I was also thinking about a bag type sale. anything you can fit into the bag is up to 50% off. still not sure. I hate to cheapen ourselves too though.

What about an old fashioned sample sale? If you have enough, you could rent a small space in a local community hall and promote it.

Cut them into pieces and sell them as batches of cleaning rags to local garages or machine shops.

Donate the printed items to the school and use it as a tax write off. Plus they may send you some work in exchange for your kind deed.

I know you were referring to the reply by @binki above, but I also use eBay for this.

For printed stuff, I use an Auction listing for each item and let it rip. This moves the stuff.

For blanks, I go with fixed price listings with size/color variations and a lowish retail price point. Some stuff moves pretty well this way, but some moves much slower than I'd like. I should probably try bundling 2 or 3 of the same size into an Auction listing.

Beyond that, donating to charity for homeless persons. A former neighbor of mine is now homeless, and apparently it is a bit of an inside joke that they ignore whatever is printed on the shirts they are given.
Industryps likes this.

For your auctions, do you use a reserve? How often do you get less than what you wanted or I should say need to get your investment back?

Thanks

It's been a while since I've done this (I only do auctions for this sort of thing). You can set the minimum starting bid, right? I believe that is what I did, rather than a Reserve (which is a number hidden from buyers).

When it comes to getting rid of stuff via auction, my aim is to reduce my loss, not break even. Else I take the slower road of retail pricing.

I almost always do free shipping and start at 99cents. You would be amazed at how it gets bid up. Make sure you lay out your goods and take lots of pictures, specify every item as a lot.

As said before, it is reduction, not profit you are after.

Good Luck.

My humorous(?) auction story: I needed a bigger/more powerful alternator for the 18-wheeler. So I got it and then put the used alternator on eBay. I had set the price at somewhere around $80, I don't remember the actual price because that was a decade ago.

Anyhow, I got no bids at all even though a couple of people were "watching." So after the auction ended I got a message from one guy trying to get me to sell it to him at a price lower than the starting bid. Since I didn't know about this tactic at the time, I just found it quite distasteful that he actually attempted this. So I replied to his message, tersely, letting him know that if he had bid he would have been the only bidder and would have won the auction at the low price.

So I re-listed the item at a starting bid of ~$60. I was flabbergasted when it sold for over $100.

But I guess that's the way it works.

I know someone who buys camera lenses, uses them for a few months and then sells on eBay. Sometimes he gets more than he paid for them.

EBay for the win! We always do ebay off our extra white shirts before it start yellowing.

Another way we get rid our extra white shirts - we print and send them to our customers who hasn't order from us for a while. An excuse to call them up and get the deals going again.
