Default American Apparel Agrees To Gildan Activewear Acquisition

Gildan acquires American Apparel

Don't know how or if this will impact the AA brand, but I find it interesting. Hopefully AA will be more widely available. Maybe they will change the name to Canadian Apparel?

I just saw this news story too. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

I think that their main selling point was the "American" part of the name. I can't really see Gildan continuing to produce clothes in the US with the massive overseas network they currently have in place.

Well, they are getting the name, IP and inventory, no plant. So the retail stores should all close as well as the big pink building in downtown LA. They do have an option to pick it up but that would be suicide. I would expect them to merge production with the AAA plant in Mexico. It is fairly new.

We haven't got this letter today but there is no final sale yet. but they want to keep the name and wholesale part of the business is what the word is. Gildan just has the best offer on the table. they want to remain in the USA tho.

It will never happen. They are not taking the production assets other than an option for them. LA and California is murder for garment manufacturing. Even if they did take it over here it is only a matter of time before they move.

You know as well as I do being in the PRC that it is very hostile for business here. I personally think that Gildan is not a great T but it is the one we sell the most of. I hope they don't ruin AAA as that is my best seller for clubs (a little higher cost for a 'guys' T) and AA for high quality, 100% cotton shirts that print very well.

I am saddened to see AAA go to Gildan as AAA was something I wore from my youth right here in Anaheim with the parks league baseball. I feel I have a personal connection with them and I was disappointed but not surprised that they moved production to Mexico. Since the facility is rather new I am expecting it will stay and AA will move production there as well with Gildan. I can't see it staying in Los Angeles. The costs are just too high.

Sad to see two of my favorite brands be gobbled up.

Am i the only one to notice American Apparel garments come with debris and loose thread all over the place. The quality control is terrible or non existent on most orders i get from them. Factory must be filthy and unkempt.

The company has been in BK almost nonstop for the last 5 years. They had to fire 1/3 of their employees because they were illegally in the USA and got raided. The Founder and CEO got kicked out and they went through 2 BK's before being sold. I think you will find them to be in disarray for a few more years until this shakes out.

If my local Gildan wholesaler started carrying American Apparel, that would be a win for me ... assuming they don't ruin the product along the way.

Will production stay in US if Forest Trump cancels NAFTA? Now that Canada has signed CETA with EU it would make sense for Gildan to look for cheap production in Asia and get exposure in Europe.

Bangladeshi Apparel anyone?
