How many calls a week do you get offering to put your business on the front page of Google?

Apparently this is the latest scam. I get at least three of these each week. The "front page of Google" doesn't even make sense.

I like to mess around with them and ask them to tell me how I can look at the front page of Google so I can see who is on there now. Then I tell them to do some research and learn what a search engine is. Sometimes they just hang up. Other times they will argue with me relentlessly until I hang up.

A week? Try per day. Two to three times.

What is funny is when I them I am not only the first page but the first entry at the top. That pretty much shuts them up.

Once I asked a guy the name of his company and then I typed "SEO services" into Google. Then I asked him how come his own company wasn't on page one. He told me to type SEO services plus the name of the town in California where they were. Well, Duh... That's a local search. Unless it's a big city, all the local business will be on page one.

At least once a day. If I'm not busy at the moment, I like to google any potential scam while I have them on the phone, If I don't feel like messing with them, saying the owner is not here, would you like to leave a message? is the fasted way to get them off the phone.

We also get these calls. They start out wanting to verify the google listing then ask about getting us a higher rank. One company told us their package starts at $399 a month.

I had one tell me she was calling to ask me a few questions to see if I qualified for their program. Really? What does it take to be disqualified?

$399 is a lot of money. If someone wants to pay me that, I can give them a money back guarantee that they'll be listed on Google Local in their town for their keywords within four weeks. All you have to do to accomplish this is submit your website to Google (which their robots would find even if you didn't,) and they send you a postcard for verification, which you mail back to them. Heck, I'll do it for half the price (for a limited time only...) $199.50 and for that you also get a free "Look for me on Google" T-shirt.

They target many industries, contractors, etc.
"Google partners" When you hear that run, or just ask for a number at google so you can call to confirm their partnership. Lol they will hang up on you.

I get a lot of them when I run ad words. They know you are trying to get work and you are paying google so they prey on these ads and call you.

It sucks because it's a waste of clicks and money. Even if you geo target your ads, i'm affraid they are masking their ip locations in order to still see them and capture your number.

Actually, in order to become a legitimate Google Partner, your have to actively manage a set ad spend , and pass a series of tests. I'd be more leery of those who aren't verified Google Partners.

And that is something totally different than SEO. It is CPC or CPM advertising.

And that's what I always point out to these bozos when they call me. Google is a search engine that has an excellent reputation for providing unbiased search results based upon unknowable and continuously evolving logarithms that you cannot jack with, no matter how clever you may fancy yourself to be. Yes, you can make your website more Google friendly by using a lot of keywords within the body of your text, and there are many suggestions published by Google to make it easier to have your website crawled by their robots.... But if anyone's making $399 per month for basic SEO work...maybe I'm in the wrong business.
