Exclamation To release or not to release...FALL IS COMING SOON!!!!

Ok so I finally got 4 designs I'm proud. It's pretty much August and by the time I save the money and print the shirts and get all the extras...packaging, stickers, what not...it will be October!!! Is it wise to still release tshirts if I live in a place where it gets VERY cold...VERY soon? Should I just wait till next year

PS I can't really afford sweatshirts yet.

Something you might want to consider is Kickstarter. It will be a great way to gauge your interest level while providing you with the cash needed to launch (potentially with sweatshirts). Kickstarter can be used as a presale but you would be offering special incentives for those who pledge.

You can set a goal, $3,000 for example.

You offer rewards for those willing to pledge money to your company.

$10 - sticker pack
$20 - sticker pack and pick a t-shirt from the collection
$50 - stickers, t-shirt, and sweatshirt
ETC

If you meet your goal, you get the money. If you don't reach your goal, the money all the people pledged won't be collected.

This eliminates your risk of buying a bunch of inventory without knowing if there is demand. And it eliminates the customer's risk because if you don't meet your goal, they don't lose their pledge.

If you don't meet your goal, maybe you rework some things and launch in the spring.

good question. sales and visibility is greater in the summer. but when i had my clothing line, i sold tee shirts all year round, altho in the summer the numbers were higher.
How many units do you plan on producing per design?

50. Should it be less or more?

For tshirt sales, I've considered Kickstarter but it seems to cheapen my brand a little.

I can kind of see where you're coming from but the way I'm looking at it for my line, it's a t-shirt company not a high end fashion line.

If you're starting an online shop, besides the people who pledge on kickstarter, who will know you started that way?

Just release them! Just make sure when you do you don't title your collection or what ever as Summer 11 if your releasing them in October.

I once spoke to the buyer of a national chain who said people buy tees year-round. Spikes in the summer, but there's no huge dip in fall/winter. People just layer their outfits when it gets colder, but they still wear tees.

I just launched and then I realized that all the other sites are slashing their prices, while I can't. So I'm just waiting it out.

You don't have a brand to cheapen. No one knows who you are.

Unless you have local stores who will carry your shirts lined up or you will be at events pitching your goods, you need not be worried about the weather in your area.

You are struggling to come up with money to go into production and didn't say a word about marketing so I'm assuming that you don't have a plan or, if you do, are not able to fund it. If that's the case then I would encourage you to initially use a fulfillment company for production while spending what money you do have (along with lots of time and effort) on sales, sales, sales.

For a clothing/fashion line at least, would it still be okay even with lower money amounts to do it all yourself (with a partner, that is); it makes everything more personal to the buyer.

Also, for a first release: Less quantity (24) with Canvas/Bella/Next Level/Hyp burnout tees or (48) with Anvil 980/880?

Would the burnout tees cost significantly more than the standard crew/V neck? The burnouts are crew.

However kickstarter takes 5% if successful and then the 3% amazon fees, about.
Does amazon take first then kickstarter?
You could always do preorders via paypal. Kickstarter has more security especially for higher $ backers, but it comes at the price of fees. They basically give ya the site/platform to put this on. You do your own advertising unless it's like features or someone sees it on kickstarters page or what have ya.
There's also prosper.com and fundry. Not too familiar with either, especially fundry.

What would be nice is if you could take the same creativity that you apply to t-shirts and use it for something like interchangeable skins for messenger bags. That way people could show off your designs all year round regardless of the weather.

When winter comes, people could still express themselves independently of what they are wearing. When they get tired of one design, they would change the skin on their bag and show off a new design.
