Default 100 or 50/50 for Heat Press Transfers

Hi all,
I have just bought a new heat press for t shirt printing. I'm a complete newbie and this is just going to be a personal hobby, nothing on an industrial scale. I was just about to press buy on a bulk tshirt order when I read a conflicting opinion on the best type of tshirts to buy.
Here in the UK it seems like its either Gildan or Fruit of the Loom. I had previously read several times that for heat transfer paper, the best way to go is to use 100% cotton. I'm only going to use this method and so i'd like to get it right before ordering but i've since read conflicting information which says its better to use a 50/50 for heat transfer paper.
Can anyone who successfully uses the heat transfer paper method tell me what they find gives the best results.
Cheers
Steve UK

Thanks for the reply. I will be using inkjet heat transfer paper and I will be using both coloured fabrics and dark fabrics.
Cheers
