I'll be contacting the DTG sample provider this week. I know the t-jet is hanes tagless 6.1oz 100% cotton cos they sent the whole t-shirt. I'll try to find out what res and how many passes they used and if they used the white t-shirt primer(fast colour).

Thing is this: the black sample from DTG Held up very well. Slight colour fade as expected, but no cracking and the white text is still really bright. The images do have a stretchy plastic feel to them!

will update when i know more

dooz, are you in South Korea right now? I'm in Seoul and a friend and I are looking to get a t-shirt business started. Perhaps we may want to exchange some knowledge down the line.

Those wash results seem about right. Some facts I've gathered from my wash test.

The white ink prints, seem to have held up better in first 5 washes then the prints with no white-ink. I think that is due to the fibrillation of the white t-shirts. Fibrillation I have found affects more the light colors (because there is less ink saturating the cotton) and cyan is the most affected because the white really contrast with any blue areas. Yellow is the least affects followed by Red.

The white ink prints faded alot in washes 6-10 because of your washing method. By not letting it dry it becomes very very fragile and prone to washing out. You can even try this. Wash it and when the t-shirt is still wet try and scratch the color and white ink layers off. I guarantee you will be able to scratch it off after a while, or at least remove some of the color. Once the t-shirt dries however it becomes much more stronger and resiliant.

re: The white t-shirt from T-Jet vs DTG. The T-Jet seems to have done a double pass and perhaps Fast Color. Prewash picture shows that it definitely has stronger saturation then the prewash Kiosk. Also, the t-shirt might be printed on a better quality cotton t-shirt which fibrillates less.

Thanks for posting up the pictures! It seems to reinforce what I have studied about DTG prints over the past few months. I'll post a new thread about different t-shirts and how they affect DTG prints shortly. It's going to be very interesting!

Yeah i thought that not allowing a dry might have speeded up the fade process, but i couldn't be bothered to due to the time factor. Wash 5 really says it all. if it is simply due to the white shirt pretreatment then Direct to garment printing definitely has my interest as you cant get photoshop effects with screen. i am more software geared than technique, and from a few metres away the colour still pops right out at you.

The colours look very different on the DTG but in your first picture the tshirt looks kinda brown rather than black, was that just the camera?

Thanks Dooz!
That was an awesome post- really helpful!
Do you know or can you find out what inkset they used for the DTG shirts (the white shirts without white ink)...It looks like they washed terrible and I really would like to know what they used...I am assuming the tjets used Dupont - they washed very well it looks like. Whatever was used on the DTG shirts I would like to make sure I stay away from.
Thanks again!

Yeah you are right. For some reason i think the change in colour was due to an ISO setting. I remember i had to change back to auto. The DTG colour hasn't changed. I just looked for how colour washed out as the washes continued.

A previous comment was probably correct that not drying between washes 6-10 caused over-softening of the white ink.

To be honest i am still impressed by the black T print quality. The issue for me would be the clogging of the print head.
