Default Livingston Hat Champ - F2000

My Livingston Hat Champ came in today. I'll have to say that it is very well made, very easy to set up on the F2000 and I am impressed. Everything is nice and sturdy (thick metal) and powder coated too.

It comes with two different sized metal cap attachments along with adhesive backed foam too. These are also very simple and easy to put on to the Hat Champ.

The Hat Champ attaches to the F2000 the same way that the original F2000 14X16 platen does with the exception of two threaded studs on the lower back of the device which take two black twist nuts that help to stable it while mounted to the F2000. Very nice. Again, all very simple and easy.

I will have to make some test runs with some old t-shirts on it to get the template positioning just right which is no big deal but that means I probably won't get to print an actual cap on it until Monday maybe.

Note -----------------> Since the tried and proven design of the Hat Champ hasn't changed in years the metal cap attachments are still made the same and still mount the same way. I would recommend ordering an extra one of each size so that you don't have to bother with switching out the foam padding so much and ruining the adhesive. I had a couple of extra ones from 15 years ago so I know this to be true. They fit my new F2000 Hat Champ just fine.

One more thing --------------> I have a cap heat press left over from my old days in retail that I can use to press a DTG printed cap but...you can also use a $35 Wal*Mart heat gun to do the same thing. I have been using a heat gun to spot my caps on the manual screen printer while printing dark color caps on my Hat Champ to dry the white for a second pass for a long time. Always worked great for me as long as you respect the power of the heat gun to burn up stuff if you don't pay attention.

One more option of course would be a tunnel dryer if you have one.

Most printed caps NEVER get washed at all so it doesn't have to be an exact science when curing them after printing like printed t-shirts do.

Hey Gino, what make/model is that hat? I really like that style and it looks like it lays down well.

It is from San Mar. 100% cotton Flex Fit 6 panel. I have it sitting on your platen that has the middle groove in the foam. It has always worked great for me over the years on the old manual printer Hat Champ too.

SanMar - Wholesale Imprintable Apparel & Accessories

BTW - the Hat Champ does not like really stiff caps because they will not conform to the platen well enough to lay flat.

Here is a template that I made in Illustrator and then saved it as a .png file in Photoshop to give you an idea of where to place your artwork in Garment Creator. It is just a tick over 5 3/4" wide.

The Hat Champ when mounted is extended out pretty far to the bottom edge of where the placed cap is and I made the artwork to work with it.

1.) Set your platen size in GC to the largest platen 16X20 in the Layout Settings, upper right.

2.) Layout your artwork to fit inside of the platen artwork. It is the exact same size as the Hat Champ big platen (with foam installed).

3.) Convert your cap artwork to a .png file and drop it into GC. You'll want to place it dead center and very close to the top edge of the GC platen board as shown with my template artwork here.

That should do it. Print away!

The T-shirt won't hold still in the clamp. You have to use a hat for it to work properly. Put a piece of clear packaging tape over the hat so you can print and wipe it off until you get it right. TIP: To make position adjustments, move the hat champ, not the screen. If you put a piece of masking tape on the press arm you can use it as a gauge to accurately move the hat champ exactly to where it needs to be.

If you encounter this problem try heating up the hat with your flash before you print. This will soften up the plastic backing structure and help it to lie flat.

Before I got mine I used to print hats with a special screen I made with three pieces of wood and a flat steel bar for the fourth side. It worked fairly well and would be good for printing on the bill. I guess you would need to buy the flat brim "gangsta style" hats do do that. If the customer wants to he can curve it himself.

Hey Ripcord! I just noticed you are my neighbor. I've even had my Westfalia serviced across the street from you at Wright's German Auto. I'll have to swing by some time. Also, is that new Steuben's location ever going to open on Wadsworth? Best cheesesteaks in Denver.
Sorry folks, way off topic for sure. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.
