Hi James, I wouldn't be able to do that, it would need to be with the purchase of a printer.

I can see where the Epson wording was somewhat unclear. The Workflow Software is included when you purchase the printer - at no additional charge. You would actually get it by downloading it from the Epson site after the printer was paid for. It is not free software.

A cue epson has taken from brother is the possibility to export a printer especific job and save it to usb, so if you often print the same jobs you only have to plug your usb key and load that file to the printer without the need of a computer, or to place teh image again in the software.

The software will provably take care of most of the suers needs, but people used to job queuing, specific control of droplet size and ink density, will want a RIP eventually.Color reproduction is very good, but I have to be true, even the high end Epson printers always benefit from RIPs, this will too, since there are a few things a RIP could give you more control over. Although for the majority of users those options would only confuse things if embedded on the default workflow software.

I have to say Kudos to Epson for shipping a printer with a software solution, it is very practical and allows for software vendor independence.

At SGIA, they were not showing the software. They did print everything off the USB. The problem with that is, if there was something wrong on the processed file, it would always print out that way. Registration is always a concern, and I did see one image they were printing was misregistered. But another one was spot on with very tight registration.

As for the RIP, I'd agree. These types of printers will always benefit with more control that a RIP can provide. What they've done so far is pretty impressive, but one of the Epson guys continued to mention how they can't fade into black, and in this industry, it's a necessity!

Does that mean they may offer a RIP of their own when released in January?

It's my understanding they have been working with a RIP company to provide a RIP, but it wouldn't be included in the original purchase. There most likely will be several RIP's to choose from. It remains to be seen if Epson will display all RIP's available or only the one(s) they recommend. Epson themselves will provide the Garment Creator software, at the same time knowing the printers would benefit from a RIP. Whether or not they can offer this information by January is questionable.

cant fade into tshirt color? or cant fade to black? im in shock.
The last thing people are waiting for is RIP war. Epson, you created a great printer, fix this thing with some equally briliant sofware/rip.

It's not fading into black. They are working on it, and most likely the software not being finished is the reason for shipping in late January. I wouldn't get too worried at this point.

Fading is more than feasible, just prepare the file accordingly before import.

This i do not agree with.

Clients expect their images to be printed and to look as good as they can be.

This does require the printer to 'alter' the images because they should understand better than anybody else how their printer can best present the clients images.

With all my respect. IMO is
Most online business is Uploading image by Internet. Aren't you thinking about this business? We all do.
Some are doing high hundreds per day.
Can we do all that? Contact all uploaders? And send revised jobs until get approved?
How many of us can say "I am master of Photoshop"?
Very little.
Believe or not so many Picture requests are on shirts which requires Perfect Fading and colors.
Which will do this for you? RIP.
Cheers! Beers are on me always.

They should at least know a couple of tricks, and understand color profiles, If you are getting in to digital printing and leave the digital out, you might as well pick another hobby.

Also Rips are not the easiest pieces of software, so it's not like a RIP fits all the enviroments, and the better the RIP the more options it has, easier to get confused if you truly do not understand it.

That is why letting end users test the machine is a very good Idea, it only took me 5 minutes to print without the black channel, something Epson hadn't thought possible with their software, and the reason is we print everyday many different designs, and you gotta have digital kung fu, because clients sometimes bring the worst files and want the absolute best.
